I'll stay in jail where I belong then...
I got put in jail on my trip this weekend. Some turd was drifting into my lane and I hit the rumbly shoulder bars. Suddenly "system fault detected" and I had no cruise control for the next 2 hours of driving. Wasn't using highway assist, just the basic adaptive cruise. I'll continue to refuse to pay a monthly fee for half-baked assistance stuff.

As far as I know, my Rivian does not have autonomous driving.
I have adaptive cruise control and lane keep, but no self-navigation or even lane change.
Is a new feature being rolled out?

I'm with you on that. I appreciate that Rivian isn't OVER selling it, but I don't feel any of these systems are ready for prime time yet. I don't know about Michigan but CO roads are so bad that even when in your own lane it feels like you are on the rumble strips.

I assumed that unlike Tesla, Rivian is giving all these features standard, at least to us early adopters and will keep on improving and adding to this.

Is that not true? Will there be a Driver ++ that I will have to pay for?

Driver +
Standard with every vehicle, Driver+ is designed to make driving safer, easier and less stressful for everyone. With Driver+ engaged, your vehicle will automatically steer and adjust speed on your command. Like all driver assistance systems, your full attention on the road is required.

I’m pretty satisfied doing most of the driving myself, thank you? However, I do like that adaptive cruise control. I’ve tried the lane centering feature and it ping ponged around so much I figured I might get pulled over for a DUI. It was very annoying!!! Of course, this was on a two lane highway, not a freeway. I know that autonomous driving will eventually be the safest way to go, but I just cringe at the thought of trusting the car that much. Having said that, I can think of lots of scenarios where it could be very useful for short periods of time.

As for paying for this feature, well, I dunno about that.

It’s probably something like Tesla’s basic autopilot (Driver+) v Tesla’s enhanced autopilot (Driver+ enhanced)

hopefully they are not going to take away any of the current free features of Driver+ and only new/advanced features will require payment.

They will almost certainly just keep features "outside" of Driver+ (by nomenclature or otherwise) so that statement holds true, while still creating additional revenue streams for advanced autonomous features.

As others have mentioned, I just want lane keep assist / auto steering on well-marked, non-interstate roads. It blows my mind that this hasn't been released by Rivian yet (given it's standard on numerous sub-$30k features) and fear they may be trying to paywall that which would be a huge mistake IMO.

As far as paying for advanced autonomy / Level 3, I'd certainly give it a try to decide if it's worth it or not, but proof would ultimately be in the performance at that point.

My truck has had this from day one and is way better at it today than it was then. You have to enable it.

What?! Where is the setting?

I have the mild LKA enabled (where it will vibrate when departing the lane and help nudge you back over a bit), but haven't found any way to enable auto-steer (or even just automatic lane centering) outside of pre-mapped, closed access interstates.

I like Driver+ so much that I would pay for it. It's only available on the tollway and the interstate in the Tampa area. It handles straightaways and curves with aplomb. I've tried it on non-limited access roads and it won't turn on, which is probably best. Compared to the Lexus lane centering software it is a generation ahead. Even the Rivian adaptive cruise is very good.

Can someone provide an informed speculation on what this might cost? ...maybe extrapolate from the Tesla pricing model?

I just did 1700 miles from San Francisco to Seattle and back. Driver+ was really nice for most of the drive and made the driving task much easier.

Where it wasn’t good was on curvy mountain interstates where some corners were posted (with warning lights) at 50mph.

The only problem I have with adaptive cruise control is in highway stop and go traffic. It needs to look farther down the road, because it waits too long to start braking from 60+ mph to a standstill.

My assumption will soon get to Ford Blue Cruise level with lane change with eye camera. Once free period expires Ford wants $800 year. My guess is $250 to $500 is what people might pay in areas with a lot of mapped roads. I don’t see many paying $800.
