@EV_Sportline

If there are two drivers (my wife and I) would it connect automatically to whomever is driving and has the phone in the car first? Or is it necessary to reconnect through the phone’s Bluetooth screen each time drivers are switched? That’s been a bit of a pain on some of the CarPlay units I’ve used in the past.
Well, I’ve yet to find any car that does priority well. It’s hit or miss in my vehicles; the problem relates that once a vehicle / phone pairs, it doesn’t keep looking and make a switch. I’ll do some testing, but heck I can’t get the Rivian to prioritize phones well already.

USB-C; but it comes with a power cord that you can plug directly into your fuse panel. If you prefer to use (and have the feature) the cig lighter port under the dash, just get a USB-C cord that plugs into the cig lighter - this works too.
How many kw does it need? There are many different adapters with various kw outputs. It appears you have a 10A fuse in the photo on your web site for
the fuse panel. Some of the cig lighter adapters are as low as 15-20kw output.

This one, that one and the other one.

I loved the second screen that was done for the Model 3/Y. That was integrated into the car.

Forgive my ignorance, but best as I can tell, other than providing a power source to the fuse box instead of the 12v plug directly below, this is not much different than using your phone instead? Given, this is cheaper, but has less function and still requires the use of your phone to operate?

Just trying to figure out if I'm gaining any features that I don't already have by using my phone mounted to the dash? Would certainly love a standalone system that doesn't need my phone to work. If it's that, then it has appeal?? If not, I'll just stick with using my phone I think.

Please help me understand the benefit over just using a phone? Thank you

For me it’s so I don’t have to fiddle with my phone’s tiny screen while driving 75 miles an hour. That’s the whole point of CarPlay. Besides the much larger map, it’s a big safety play as it reads the texts for you and keep most interaction to Siri in the car.

If that’s not a priority then it may not be worth the investment.

If the only MAIN advantage is getting WAZE and music.....I will pass. I use Spotify and love it and if I want to listen to my music, I can just Bluetooth it. People complain about the Nav system.....while it isn't perfect, it isn't that bad either. If I am going to someplace I am not familiar with, I will go onto Google Earth and check out the surroundings to familiarize myself with it. Also, I will check out Plug-Share to see what the chargers are like and I will enter te address in the Navigation on the app and send it to the Rivian.

I can see how some people will want this and love it....and who knows, maybe in a few years I will want it, but for now, as Simon Cowell would say "It's a No from me".

Good job though!

I love the Spotify app too. The day Rivian allows for additional 3rd party apps like Google Maps or Waze, I’d be glad to forgo CarPlay. I’d like to not have to think too hard when I use the GPS with little nuances that are so helpful, like accurate / crowdsourced traffic that shows up red, yellow or green on the screen with traffic lights and stop signs to help ease navigation turns. To have a consistent UI across all my cars is another added convenience developed over the last 5 years.

So for some of us this is worth it.

Great points. I think Rivian needs to ditch MapBox and source Google map data. I do wish the Rivian Nav app would be more like WAZE in the fact that I can report incidents along the way and it will redirect me if the traffic gets bad. I understand them not adding CarPlay....I read somewhere that Apple needs a chip inside the unit in order for it to work....but I don't see why at least the navigation part can't be updated.

If I am going to someplace new or I am not familiar with, I will use Apple Maps on my phone. My Apple Watch is linked to it and will vibrate and make a "bonk" noise when I am coming up to a turn.

The one thing I wish Rivian/Spotify would allow is the ability to move the "play" screen to the drivers side. As it is now, if I like a song or want to forward through a PODCAST, I have to lean over to advanced 10 seconds....and sometimes my finger doesn't make it to that because of a bump in the road.

Larger screen for CarPlay functions? Easier to see CarPlay apps/maps? Easier touch screen access than fiddling with a smaller phone?

EDIT: I will also enjoy having the "gauge view" up on the main screen while using this one for the maps! Woo-hoo, @EV Sportline!

@EV Sportline when connected via the fuse tap will the screen turn on randomly when the truck wakes up (built in screens are off but truck wakes up)? I had tried one previously which was turning on at random times and I was finding my phone connecting to it from our bedroom which is above the garage. I know the in dash 12v was getting energized when the truck wakes. Wondering if using the fuse is a better experience?

Man, just this morning this awful built-in GPS took me to the wrong location...again. I don't want to add another screen to this truck, like, AT ALL, but holy hell I may have to. The Rivian software is just so terrible. I could also stop paying $15/mo for Tidal and just use the Apple Music account my family already has. Can anybody speak to the sound quality of this setup? I have to imagine it won't sound as good because it's over bluetooth, but the question is how noticeable is the decline?

The audio is high quality - it's a bluetooth connection to the Rivian audio system, so there is no fm transmitter 'noise'.

Right, but bluetooth quality is inherently worse than the top quality of the built-in Tidal app. No idea how it compares to Spotify, but there was a very clear (to me, at least) difference between Spotify and Tidal in the truck

Yes (my opinion). Whenever Aux power is activated, that circuit will energize.

I think the point was, BT is WAY BETTER than all of the other generic CarPlay displays that rely on a crappy FM transmitter for sound. I have one of those and can speak from experience.

you can try this yourself, just bluetooth audio from your phone to the Rivian. That is exactly the audio quality you'll get from our screen use.
