My first winter trip in the Rivian was better than expected. We live in southwestern WI with property in northeastern Door County, WI - 268 miles one-way. I’ve been trying to finish a project in DC and as Mother Nature plans poorly there was a two-day window to make a quick round trip to sew-up the project.

It was averaging 23° outside and I fueled our R1T max pack to 100%, 410 miles was the reported range, and I took off. Cabin comfortably set at 69°, seats and steering wheel heat on, tires at 50 psi, I stayed at 57 in 55 mph zones and 65-67 in Hwy 70 mph zones.

At the start of my trip the nav system said, charge in Oshkosh, about 2/3 of the total trip, for 20 mins. WTF, really?!?! And it showed that I would arrive at my destination with 10 miles, about 2.5%. I had about 3 hrs in front of me to see if that estimation was going to be true.

As I progressed my trip the destination arrival miles grew from 10 to 20 and by Oshkosh it said, 60. Ok, Rivian is a conservative estimator vs my 2021 Tesla MSLR is overly optimistic which drives me batshit crazy.

I drove past the ChargePoint 50kw charger and continued on. (BTW, the northeastern region of WI is literally a high-speed charging desert. There are no high-speed chargers but six 350kw EA chargers are scheduled to open later this month in Howard/Green Bay.

I was thrilled to see the original estimation becoming untrue.

I arrived at my destination with 90 miles and 22%.

The return trip home the following day with 100%, the nav system made the same recommendation and I drove past the recommended stop arriving home with 90 miles and 22% reserve.

(BTW, the passenger seat is a darn comfortable overnight recliner sleeper.)

268 + 90 = 358mi expected range in those conditions, maybe more since the computer is underestimating? Not too shabby!

What was your efficiency? I have to imagine it was pretty good given those speeds. And you appear to have all season tires on 21” or 22” wheels.

Cabin comfortably set at 69°
But how? 69 degrees will blow AC when on auto unless I'm missing something?
I have to set to 72 or above to get it to switch to heat.

Glad to hear the trip went well!

Go to ABRP app and set the SOC to 5%. It will do the trick of not recommended you to stop and charge

When driving I manually set temp, close upper side vents and set fan speed at lowest setting. It’s usually the most comfortable for me. Sometimes I’ll put it at 70°-71° but within 10 mins I’m setting back at 69°. It could be I preheat the cabin, while plugged in, to 72° just before taking my trip.

I still don't understand how you are not receiving cold air blowing through the vents when it is set at 69 degrees (regardless of preheating, using auto, or setting fan manually).
There are many threads on the HVAC system and that somewhere between 71-73 is the point where people have to set to get heat. Anything below is AC (notice the snowflake vs heat symbol when toggling between 71 and 72). If yours shows the heat symbol below this point that would be the first I have heard.

For me, there are three red curly fries at 69º and at 67º it's blue snowflakes.

Seems to be more related to outside temperature.

Driving in actually cold climates requires it be at a lower temperature than people driving when its warmer outside.

^ there are slight variations between vehicles, in my R1T 71=A/C, 72=Heat

The OP is lucky 69=heat, I'd prefer that to 72deg.

100% agree. I'd likely be unhappy with 72º min heat setting.

Agree its more due to ambient temperature. Where I live its 72 to get heat until its really cold out then my setting of 70 gets heat. When I drove up to WI the truck put out heat just fine at 70 auto even though it doesn't do it here.

I also find that the sensor can heat up due to bright and sunny days which skews it here as well.

Yeah, it's brutal when you're wearing a jacket and long sleeve shirt. When taking my R1T out now, even in winter I wear a short sleeve shirt and very light fall weight jacket.

last night I drove our Model 3, it was 29deg here- I was super happy to be able to set the heat at 67deg and feel warm air coming out of the vents without overheating the cabin.
