The Setup
We’re in Palm Springs for a 4-day weekend and after a side-trip to the high desert yesterday I went to charge today for the drive home tomorrow. I went to the Blink chargers, started charging, and then got to work on email while I waited. A short time later a Hyundai Ioniq 5 driver pulled up and seemed to be having trouble so I asked if he needed any help. The driver explained this is a rental and he normally drives a Tesla. He had the app installed and setup (I complimented him on being prepared) but it appeared that the entire pedestal with 2 charging cables was marked unavailable.
No Good Deed…
I told him he should pull over in the space next to mine since it showed available on the app. He did, he connected, and initiated the charge on his app. He seemed concerned it was taking a while but I explained it’s normal in my experience so he got in his car. I heard the pedestal cooling fans ramp up and figured he was good to go.
Critical Battery Error
I heard a loud clunk and simultaneously hear a sequence of three descending tones from the Rivian which repeat continuously. I see Critical Battery Error with a Christmas Tree’s worth of warning lights on the driver’s display. Who says Rivian doesn’t have a Holiday Mode for Christmas?
DON’T PANIC
That’s what I told myself despite the pit in my stomach.The never-ending 3 tone progression is still playing in the background. (As an aside: Seriously, Rivian? Maybe stop after 30 seconds unless someone tries to put the vehicle in gear. It only increased my stress level and would’ve made talking on the phone with support that much harder.) I figured a hard reset was in order so I held down the leftmost steering wheel button and the hazard button and saw a message on the central display that diagnostics were being logged. No reset, though. Yikes! Tried again waiting longer and… same thing.
I decided to try resetting the infotainment and still no change. It did continue making the 3 chime sound throughout so the Rivian gets bonus points for persistence. Next I figured I’d let it go to sleep. So I stepped out, locked up, and waited. Eventually I heard the sound I associate with the vehicle going to sleep so I walked back over, opened the door and got treated to the three chime serenade again. I figured maybe it would respond to a hard reset after the sleep and it DID! After booting up, all appeared okay and I more than enough charge to get home.
Not Out of the Woods Yet
I am not sure what will happen if I try another DCFC and I don’t want to find out that there’s a bigger problem while 100+ miles from home. After we get home tomorrow and unload everything, we’ll go to a nearby DCFC and see what happens. If all is well then I have to assume that something was up with the Blink charger and I’ll let them know. If it errors out again then I’ll contact Rivian service so they can look at it when it isn’t a huge hassle for us, and our cat.
I hope this experience helps someone out there if they have a similar problem. I was very pleasantly surprised to be able to leave the charger in our Rivian which was moving under its own power.
