I really don't want to spend ~3-4k on a roof top tent that would be difficult to install by myself and I'd only use a few times a year. Has anyone tried a bed tent like this?

Having to take everything out of the bed to use it is a bit of a bummer but can be worked around.

I'm tempted to roll the dice an an Alibaba RTT just to see what they're like.

Might as well get a ground tent IMO.

It is possible to get a RTT for around $1500 or less, you just need to shop companies like Overland Vehicle Systems or Ironman 4X4. The difference between the $3k tents are going to be cheaper materials, zippers and mattress.

Another option I like (currently on sale for around $2200) is the IKamper X-Cover 2.0 Mini that fits great on the R1T.

I don't have an RTT yet. My only rationalization for getting one would be sleeping comfort. I'm old enough that I have less desire to sleep on the ground.

RTT's have downsides too. There are a lot of camping spots where the place you park your car isn't the same place you want your tent.

The other benefit of quicker setup time can be real, but setting up a tent isn't that hard. You could also get a normal tent like the Gazelle that is designed for quick setup for much cheaper than a RTT.

I guess I don't see much real benefit to attaching a tent to the vehicle.

I have this exact model and install/remove solo. The ease of doing so has led to more uses than expected. I used to ground camp and considered a bed tent, but I'm much happier with this option.

I bought a truck bed tent for light use camping. Satisfied with it for my use. Here is the link: https://c6outdoor.com/collections/rev-pick-up-tents.
i did not have a good way to wrestle a RTT by myself in my garage, so I opted to go this route.

Just got my R1T
Still like this tent?

Same situation - got dogs- want them off the ground to lessen the reactions- and no way we're getting the big guy up a RTT ladder-

would love to see what the box looks like in the bed before it's set up

I STILL HAVE MINE. IT'S BASIC, BUT EASY TO SET UP AND WORKS IN THE BED OR ON THE GROUND.

I grabbed a harbor freight atv winch, and made a home depot run to make this tent installer:

To put the tent on, I raise my truck to High, and back into my driveway. I spool in on the winch, which brings it up to level. From there I roll the whole gantry over my bed, and lightly let out the winch until the crossbars click into place. Then I drop the truck to Low, and drive out from under the gantry.

To take the tent off, I do the same thing in reverse.

I've used this thing quite a lot over the last 9 months since I built it. I'd definitely make some improvements were I to build it again, but I can't complain too much.

I tried one of those tents on my R1T, had to return it because it wouldn't fit well on the truck. The R1T (somewhat) unibody design doesn't give you enough attachment points to tie down the tent, it falls back.

You can also transport it vertically against the side of the bed, so that you can fit a couple of bikes in the bed over the tailgate at the same time.

Same model? How much does it weigh?

That's an iKamper mini 2.0, claimed weight of 125lbs. Plus the crossbars and my bedding and it's probably near 150.
