I’ve run 25k miles on my R1T beginning with my Pirelli OEM AT 20”. Those lasted about 17k miles before the noise was unbearable. I’ve tried several tires since then and found the holy grail of looks, comfort, and efficiency:
1. Pierelli OEM AT 275/65/20: good response, traction, and longetivity. Horrible noise and very stiff. Switched out at 17k miles and historical 1.85 M/kw
2. Michelin Defender LTX MS2 in 275/60/20: These reduced the size of my tire to 33”, but it was butter smooth, quiet, and efficiency jumped to around 2.4 M/KW. Looked bland, actually i hated the look. Was going to keep until i put it in sport in a spirited drive. These tires made the rivian dangerous - wobly, lack of traction. I had around 2k miles i changed them.
3. Michelin Defender Platinum 275/65/20: good look, quiet, soft - even for an LT tire. Traction was not great, but steering response was ok. Over 5k miles, it gave me an average of 1.9 M/kw. The reason i changed them out was because vibrations would always come back after 500-800 miles of being balanced.
4. Nitto Recon Grappler AT 116 275/65/20: AWESOME! Soft, quiet (not as quiet as the LTX), awesome look, no vibration. Best of all? I’m averaging 2.4 M/kw in my first 1k miles! I think it will do better once things settle more. The reason i believe so is because my commute is about 30 miles and with these, i’m consuming around 9% whereas my defender LTX was overing around 10%, with the OEM being around 12-13%.
The peson at Discount Tire pushed me towards the Nitto after my fails with the Michelins - i was not going to listen to him, but he said i will not regret. He told me that these weigh like 48lbs, the lightest AT, are 116 so will be soft and quiet vs an LT, and are much more efficient vs the Recon Grappler non AT. I’m so glad i did, so passing along to this forum! Adding pictrures of the three tires so you can see the look.
LOL. When you got to make 250 miles between charges, you have to go on conserve.
This is a really great tire considering it comes in so many sizes that will fit the 20" rims. It might also be the best efficiency all terrain tire for the Rivian too...

Thanks for sharing. I have two questions, the first is about noise, since you changed from OEM to Defender to Def PLatinum and now Nitto, which one do you think is better for cabin noise? Also, all your tests where in Conserve mode 70mph right?
The best noise by far were the Defender M/S2 - super quiet. The Platinums and the Nitto's are different, Platinum's are definitely quieter, but higher pitch. I prefer the Nitto's lower pitch, but marginally louder than the platinums. The Pirelli's even when new were louder than the Nittos.
Interesting, I live in Florida and have the 20 AT with 10K miles and average 38mph I have 2.14miles per kwh average since day one. I drive 100% of the time in AP High Regen. Correct - all comparisons were done in conserve. Having said that, I don't know how I can even get close to 2.0 M/KW in AP mode - even in my wife's R1S with 21s, were getting 1.92 in a mix of AP and Conserve... So here is another point of comparison lol - the Nitto's are more efficient than the 21's on my wife's R1S...
Very predictable. Acceleration is good. I would give the edge to the Pirelli OEM AT in terms of traction. I must have had a great copy of the Pirellis, cause they were also much better than the Platinum and Defenders.....If I rank order them it would be Pirelli, Nittos, Defender, Platinum

Average temps is the biggest factor…my sloppy math says that every 7F increase/decrease in Temp causes almost 0.1 MPK change…example if the average temp this winter in Atlanta was 45F and let’s say 60F in Florida, so a Floridian might get 2.0 MPK but the Atlantian will get 1.8…air density is the critical factor here and changes with temp, pressure, and even elevation…so the Atlantian gets +0.1 MPK for slightly higher elevation, 1.9 MPK…
I don't know what harder to believe, the 2.4 with the higher rolling resistance Nitto's or the laughable 1.8 with the Rivian engineered OEM Pirelli's, especially in Conserve mode. People have said they get 2.2 with those in AP!
Sounds about right... that's why I like to look at the relative comparisons not straight up efficiency numbers... too many factors... but I will tell you that efficiency for me in ATL (~1000 ft elevation) is about .2 M/KWh worse than when I'm in Savanna at sea level...
