For reasons I won’t go into here, I use my fob a lot! I hang it on my belt loop with the carabiner. Two months ago, during the course of an “adventure” activity, it disappeared off my belt loop - never to be found again. I ultimately purchased another fob for $260 - ouch. The moral of the story is, be careful using the carabiner. It can be dislodged pretty easily. In fact, the next day after receiving my new fob, I was loading some tires into the back of my truck (swapping out the winters). I had the fob on my belt loop, which was covered by my t-shirt. After finishing my tire chore, I noticed the fob, while still hanging on my loop, had come open ? Apparently, as I was lifting the tires, the fob was forced open by contact. This made me realize how easily this could happen, without being noticed. At least, this time, I noticed it before it fell off. While one may get away with using the fob in this manner, for a long time (took me 4 months to lose it), this type of situation could happen to anybody, at any time. The carabiner, while cool, is simply not reliable!

My solution is to glue the carabiner closed. There is really no compelling reason to have that carabiner, anyway. Once the carabiner is neutralized, the fob can be attached in another more secure fashion ( some sort of hook or real guy carabiner). I purchased a nice little 8” chain on Amazon, for about $8 (actually two for $8). The chain has clamps on each end. Now, I clamp the chain to the fob carabiner loop, which no longer opens, and to my belt loop. I then drop my fob in my pocket. It should be pretty darn hard to lose it, now.
My solution is to hang up the FOB on the key rack and leave it there. I always have my phone and/or the keycard in my wallet so there is no need for it. I do like it, but to us, it isn't useful.

This has been brought up before but it's a good reminder for all (and perhaps the first time newer members are hearing about this).

My solution to this problem is that the FOB makes a nice desk ornament. It only gets used when I drop the R1S off for service.
We just hand the keycard to them. Our FOB is hanging on the key rack in our hallway. The only time is hasn't been there is when it falls on the cabinet, otherwise....there it sits!....it does look cool though.

Excuse me. You quoted me, so allow me to respond. If you don’t even use the fob, that’s cool ? A lot of people don’t use it. I get that. But, why are bothering to post that on this thread just to tell us you don’t use it? Your post has no relevance to this thread topic ??‍♂ Just sayin’ ✌

I appreciate your post. While I don't carry my fob often, I've noticed that the carabiner loop on my belt loop will swing open unbidden. Didn't appreciate the risk that posed until reading your post.
Oh, and thank you for not starting your post with those over-used lines, "Is it only me . . . " or "Am I the only one . . . "
Thanks for taking the time.
I am absolutely guilty of starting threads with some comment like that. Look at any thread I started and it starts with something nerdy.

Sorry not sorry. It is my opinion and I feel it is relevant to give a counter point....wouldn't you agree?

Not interested in getting into a pissing match. I agree 100% on the counter point issue, if it’s relevant. I absolutely respect different opinions on how or if to use the fob. Everybody has their own use case. However, if you read my original post, I think you would see that my intention was to alert those who DO actually use the fob that the carabiner is very unreliable and one might lose their expensive fob. My OP had nothing to do with whether an individual actually uses or doesn’t use the fob. It was not a poll. If you don’t use the fob, that’s fine. I understand perfectly. Lots of people don’t use the fob. Lots do. Sometimes I don’t and most times I do. However, in terms of this specific thread, I don’t see how not using the fob, period, has any relevance to the CARABINER issue for those who DO use the fob. Have a FOBuless day✌

The only time I use my key fob is when I have to leave the truck at an airport parking lot...and I surely hope they don't lose it in the process.

Yeah. But once you super glue it, I think it’s plenty sturdy enough for its intended purpose. Not going to be using it on my next climb up El Capitan, but…………..

If the idea is to hang the fob externally from something like a belt loop or backpack, after gluing the Rivian carabiner closed, a setup like this would be much more secure. Anyway, lots of option, depending on use case.

I agree, your thread was about the carabiner.....my opinion was basically "if you don't use the FOB and use the PaaK or Card, you won't have the carabiner issue". That doesn't mean that you shouldn't use the FOB, I am just saying the solution for me was to NOT use the FOB and I was just stating my opinion why I don't use the FOB. There were/are plenty of solutions in the other responses...I was merely giving mine.....take it or leave it!

I think Rivian should do a better job at that design for sure. Maybe get a mountaineering mfg. company involved in designing one that is specific to Rivian. I think one that is used in rock climbing and supporting hundreds of pounds would be tough enough for a FOB.

I just keep my fob in my pocket. Seems like a douchey move to attach it to a belt loop...like "look at me, I'm an adventuring Rivian owner."

I keep forgetting other people think I think they care what I think they think about me when the truth is I couldn't think or care less.
