Rivian Wall Charger Keeps Dropping to reduced level

Sometime around the latest vehicle update to 2023.50.01 the charger started acting screwy. It will charge for the first hour at max speed (10.9 kw/h) and at the end of that hour drops to 6.9 kw/hr and stays there, regardless of state of charge. If you unplug and replug it starts the clock over, works for an hour and then drops. We have a different level II charger that chargers at about 9 kw/hr and will charge at that level consistently to the desired max charge rate.

I have reset the breakers for the charger. Performed a hard reset on the vehicle. The problems persists. Rivian chat support sent my problem to their “charging team” two weeks ago and only crickets in response. Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks R1Thor. I already have, and have an open ticket, but I was trying to see if anyone else had experienced this and found some silly solution I had not yet.

Is the handle getting hot? Your Rivian will reduce charging speed if the connection heats up too much. That could be happening here. Causes could be a bad connection due to foreign material in the plug, or a damaged pin in the plug, or a damaged socket on the vehicle.

Have you tried your Rivian charger with a non-Rivian vehicle? That might help in discovering whether the problem is with the charger or with the vehicle.

Thanks VSG. No heat at handle. I can go out after the hour when It slows the charge and unplug and replug with no heat.

Charging it on our other level two charger does seem to be OK, but because it only plugs into a 240 V plug, it already charges at a little lower max kilowatt at about 9 1/2, but it doesn’t drop like the Rivian one does.

Rivian finally contacted me back, somehow, my last ticket got lost, and they have sent it to the battery team who should reach out to me next week. I will update if they are able to fix it.

Hi disneydoc. Not sure if you're in Florida or Cali bit I've had a similar problem and have an appointment with the Orlando Service Center Monday.

Started out with the same issue of slower than expected charging on the Rivian home charger. Whereas I could typically charge at 11 kW reliably I suddenly would only get 5-6 kW. I believe this predated the last update. Started troubleshooting with service who likewise then referred me to the charging team after trying a series of infotainment and vehicle resets and sleep cycles. Lie your experience, charging team response took quite a while.

In the meantime the issue escalated beyond my home charger to problems charging level 2 at my workplace suggesting a vehicle rather than a charger issue. Then I started getting vehicle error messages at work followed by the same messages on my home charger. I can now no longer Level 2 charge. Now Level 3 charging is slower than normal peaking a 130 kW 9n a 350 kW EA charger.

Rivian service has been very helpful but the charging team seems to be several steps behind and very slow to respond. Service advisors escalated the issue and connected me directly with the Orlando Service Center who moved up my appointment to address the charging issue urgently. They said they probably wouldn't be able to address the other issues on my ticket until the original later appointment but I'm perfectly fine with that.

I'd recommend staying in touch with service and updating your ticket frequently with pictures and videos of the charging behavior. My issues developed slowly at 1st but progressed rapidly after that.

I’ve had a few occurrences of “slowed charging” these last several months. Had the vehicle stop charging due to the plug getting too warm. I have a ticket and an appointment with the service center tomorrow and hope to get a better opinion from the service tech.

Here is my plug. I think I have a burnt/damaged pin in my wall connector. Maybe on the truck plug too? I don’t remember what they looked liked with new.

I agree, your pics do seem to show evidence of arcing across the L1 AC pin. Not sure if the pin on the truck was defective from the factory or is eroding. There is also evidence of scorching on the plug side.

Do let us know the outcome of your service appointment.

Update from Rivian. I don’t see it but they say evidence of arcing So replacement of the charger is now pending

I'm facing this same problem now. Rivian wall charger charges for an hour at 11kw and then drops down to 7kw and stays there. Service center looked at it and did not see the issue on a different 9kw charger. Opened a ticket and they've asked me to follow up with the charging team.

I had mine replaced under warranty and Rivian paid the electrician to do the swap. Arcing in the connector was the fault. Mine did it in first 10k miles I think and my replacement has been good ever since and at 40k now.

I have the same issue. After about an hour the charge rate drops. I have opened three tickets over the last six months and "team" responsible has called three times. A very inexperienced person calls and asks about the problem. They have not read the notes or looked at the photos. They always seem very interested but nothing happens after. I have kinda just dripped the issue. I understand Rivian is having a very hard time with the service organization.

After reading this I will start another ticket. Thank you
