Based on a lot of anecdotal input, they roll dice to determine these costs for Rivians since they're so new--they just don't have the history that everything else out there has (which is a strong reason that I want one!). That freaks out the actuaries and they just reach into a grab-bag of $bazillions.

Since the deer around me really do routinely exceed 100lbs, I am very curious about your process--lead the way! I am generally curious whether there are good data about EV vs. deer collisions as compared to ICE vs. deer. The lack of engine noise (as a bicyclist, I can tell you that this feature of EVs terrifies me!) plus the presence of the light bar ("deer in the headlights" has a literal meaning!) would seem to predict a higher rate of deer-related accidents. But I don't know if data have been collected. If I find a legitimate reference, I'll post it.

Following. Was in four accidents with deer in previous vehicles. The worst was over $4k in early 2000's dollars (60 mph on I95). After that I started putting brush guards on all my vehicles. I know there's a lot of anecdotal evidence about if these are better or worse in a collision, I can just say that in my experience, the last deer I hit with a guard (60 mph on I66), the deer knocked out a headlight, bent a small piece of the guard, but the vehicle was otherwise undamaged. Waiting for these to become more common for Rivian vehicles.

This little dude followed me around as I did yard work for a solid half-hour last summer. I'm sure mama was watching and prepared to stomp me silly if I got too close! I neither want to damage them nor my truck (er...but venison is so yummy! just not when harvested with my truck)!

I'll take all the cervid-avoidance I can get!

That sucks. I had an almost identical accident towards the end of last year. Same location on the vehicle and everything. My camera didn't record it as an incident either. It was pretty obvious when I took it in though, because some of the fur was still stuck in the bumper. It was a 2 month wait to get it into the shop. I had to remove the front tire and hammer the charge port bracketry back into place, because it was pushed back into the wheel well, and I needed to use it during those 2 months. It then spent about a month in the shop. It was over the holidays, so that probably slowed it down some. In the end, it came out to about 15k. I hope your repairs go quicker than mine did. Icing on the cake is that I just drove through a hail storm last weekend and now need a lot of PDR.

I think you are right at least for the side strikes

I was hoping the R1 light bar would have helped based on this article:

But that article seems to be directed to deer standing in the road, not to deer targeting your headlights and approaching from the side.

Wow... After seeing the above at $14k... I would have to go nearly $18-20k as you have more damage than he did.

This happened recently to a friend of mine. Similar level of damage from the deer strike. The repair estimate was $45k and his insurance company nearly wrote the truck off as total loss. The worst part is the repair took >6 months. In the end, my friend wishes he'd just taken the insurance payoff.
