When you say chip repairs, do you mean rock chips on the paint?

If so, I’m not surprised. Given the current state of the insurance industry, at least here in California, I wasn’t willing to use my homeowners insurance for a water leak that caused a few thousand dollars in damage. Sadly I’d rather not be dropped in the current state of affairs, so I’m saving any insurance claims for the unlikely meaningful “event “.
Exactly. I raised my HO insurance deductible to lower my rate (still high) as I know that I can really only use my insurance in a catastrophic event. Any use will cause me to be dropped. And I have no other options as I am “too close” to a fire zone. They already made me rip out all plants against my home or they would drop me. They used satellite imagery to spy on my yard. Completely sucks.

I have five comprehensive claims that are all windshield glass chip repairs over the past four years - I have tried to switch insurance twice in the past two years and I am denied since I have “too many comprehensive claims “.

I’m inclined the believe what OP is dealing with.
I am surprised (maybe not) as chip repair saves them $$$ vs replacing a windshield

Yup - I am still pissed about the whole thing. Seems like almost all quotes are provided by algorithm and the algorithm just sees multiple comprehensive claims doesn’t care what they actually are - I have called him to talk to a representative previously and they said sorry, sir. We can’t go against what the computer tells us. Bullshit imo.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Progressive is INSANELY low for me, I tell everyone to try them first. They seem to love EVs. This is a six month policy. Our Smart is also on the policy and adds around $210, which is funny, since that car could be replaced completely for $12k.

That’s so much better than the Progressive quote I’m getting here in the bay area, but even with my quote being more than 2x this, it’s still a LOT cheaper than my current Nationwide coverage.

I have Nationwide because of Replacement Value, but not sure that’s as important anymore given value of used market.

Everything in CA is way more expensive to insure, and especially the bay. Where I live, there's really no crime, and there has never once been an auto theft in my immediate area.

I switched to progressive for the first time from my usual back n forth between state farm and geico.

They got me a great rate for home owners + 2 cars.

Then 6 months go by and they raised our car rate by $400 per 6 months... fuckers...

No accidents, no claims, just them being greasy slime balls.

Due to other things on my plate, I just paid it but will be shopping around in 6 months.

I've never had a premium hike from them, only decreases. (And I mean on a large scale, I guess I'd never notice if it went up $20/year for example.)

That’s a great idea - might call my agent next week to ask about the same. I’m also near a fire zone (but not in it), and precious few insurance companies are writing policies here. I’m just going to suck it up until the cycle turns, at which time I might shop things.

Insurance in general is just a super tough business right now. Between the cost of repairs (skyrocketing on vehicles and rising on homes), more weather events in the middle of the country (hail/wind events) and fires out west, it's hard for the companies to make money.

I expect it to continue getting worse.

Nationwide sent me a letter saying they were dropping insurance coverage for all our vehicles at the end of June 2024. They sited reason that our chip repairs and one small (but costly) accident was outside of their policy. No driving record - not even a speeding ticket. Nationwide may be dropping insurance coverage of Rivians.
Wouldn’t surprise me. When I was purchasing my car in April, I selected Rivian Insurance and was given the name of a guy to call. I called him and he was with Nationwide. He said they would only insure me if I brought all my cars over to them and would possibly even require a home. I told him right now, I only was thinking about one car, because I was getting a killer deal from Geico for my other 3 cars and home. He said they can’t get any policies underwritten that are just single cars and said he’s seen them start dropping customers. So….it sounds to me like Nationwide thought it would be lucrative to be Rivian’s official insurance provider, but found out it was not profitable and they are just unwinding. When I told my guide, she said she had heard that Rivian was trying to find another underwriter.

They doubled our rates on our T. No accident history (ever) for my wife and I. No ticket history either. We went with Geico

I have nationwide and I opted to do a year premium to kick the can further down but no joke; when I was shopping around, every two weeks they would tell me a higher quote and their go-to excuse was “oh, it’s not us it’s your state. Your state legislation is causing your rates to go up”.

I asked to have them explain how so but they couldn’t get into the details. ??‍♂

Whelp… If insurance companies are gonna keep playing this game, they’ll be forcing states to create state-funded (ahem! Social) insurance. And then, they’ll whine about unfair competition.

When people can’t get insurance in high fire zone areas here in CA they need to go to the state and it is definitely not cheaper. Despite my annoyance with insurance companies it’s obnoxiously expensive compared to what the market provides.
