RAN Rivian Adventure Network Issues

Drove back from Mammoth Lakes, CA yesterday and the RAN in Bishop, CA was all messed up. Got there and pulled up to a charger, all 6 were available. The charger had ”FREE” under pricing, YAY! Plugged in and it went thru the motions and the station displayed the green lights. However, my charge port ring was red and a message on the dash said “ended by station”. Tried unplugging and starting over, same thing. Moved to three other stations with same result. Then tried the isolated “pull-thru” station which displayed a price of $0.36/kWh which worked as per normal, except it had all 300kW available. On the way up this same RAN had four R1’s charging and each was limited to 99kW. I charged to 80%, while doing so another R1 pulled up and experienced the same problems at two of the chargers.
Next, I stopped at the RAN in Olancha, CA. Hooked up only to find the same issues, all three (only three there) had the “FREE” pricing displayed. I called RIVIAN and they said that they were having issues in CA, AZ and NV. Fortunately there was a EA 17 miles away. Although it also had issues, but I was eventually able to get sufficiently charged there to get home to Valencia, CA.
All these charger issues added at least an hour to my drive home! This trip usually would take us 4.5 - 5 hrs in our ICE vehicles and 5.5 hrs in the R1 but we left Mammoth at 4pm and didn’t get home until 10:45pm!

FWIW chargers haven’t been free at RANs for quite some time now. That’s a weird bug to see.

It has been excessively hot in the Sierras the past few weeks, and with near-full utilization, you will see the RANs de-rate to 99kW. Same thing happened to us in Truckee last weekend where it was 95 degrees and all stations were taken. Happened before in Manteca as well. Just gave me more time to get lunch after a great backpacking weekend.

Curious - you couldn’t get from Bishop to Valencia on a single charge? Towing, roof-gear (tents, etc)?

Also, as a networking guy, “Rivian Area Network” is the greatest typo I could see on this forum. Thank you for this.

I would just note that the power cabinets are rated at 300kW total power output. So if three trucks are plugged in, the max each truck will see is 100kW assuming all are demanding more than 100kW each. So it's not a derate due to thermal/heat conditions, just power sharing.

Aha! Good to know, and certainly explains why 1A/B/C and 2A/B/C were all running at 99kW.

Ok, I should have emphasized the issue wasn't the charge rate but the inability to charge!

I had the same experience in Ukiah yesterday. Plugged in, authenticated, and the charger stopped before delivering power. Had to call Rivian to get a charge started manually.

its 200 miles from Bishop to my house, if I charged to 80% in Bishop I might get home with 1% remaining. I stop in Olancha (77miles from Bishop) and charge back to 80% and will get home with 70-80 miles, sometimes only 50 miles. It just depends on headwinds, temps (AC needs) etc.

Had the same issue the other day in Corte Madera, CA in the bay Area. A couple of others were there and said they called Rivian and were told it was a network issue affecting all stations. I had to move onto an EA station nearby to get enough juice to get home.
