When Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019, it announced plans to put more than 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road by 2040. Five years later, and the house that Bezos built just crossed the 15,000 EV milestone.

Amazon famously partnered with Rivian, pouring serious money into a concept that (at the time) was little more than a sketch. Less than three years later, the vans were on the road, delivering kitty litter with free, 2-day shipping to customers who can’t be bothered to drag themselves to Costco.

It’s hard to argue with their success. To date, Amazon vans from Rivian have delivered more than 800 million packages to customers in the US. And Amazon, to its credit, has moved up the timeline.

Amazon now plans to fully electrify its 100,000+ delivery van fleet by 2030 — fully ten years ahead of the original plan.

ā€œOur 2024 Sustainability Report underscores our unwavering commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040,ā€ states Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. ā€œElectric vehicles (play) a pivotal role in our strategy.ā€

Amazing... NY is the 4th most populated state, and I have yet to see an EDV on the road or making a delivery so far. Where's the beef?

If they want to hit 100,000 by 2030, seems like they need to get faster adoption asap. YoY adoption has been considerably under 10,000 EDVs. With 5.5 years left, Amazon needs to put 15.5K vans per year into service

The bottleneck seems to be getting chargers in place at the distribution centers.

I am certainly seeing more of them around my city. The rear/headlight lighting profile stands out a bit.
You can also identify them by a very distinctive back-up sound.

In my area it's something like 50/50 (totally inscientific data) EDV vs. ICE. One Amazon driver who came up my driveway nodded at my R1T and said "how do you like your Rivian?" I replied, nodding at his van, "how do you like yours?" I've had similar conversations with others.

There may be a higher density of EDVs in my area because we've got a very strong Amazon warehouse hub presence. (My town has the dubious distinction of being where six Amazon employees were killed when a tornado hit the warehouse a couple of years ago.) I think this also helps my Service Center, which is adjacent to the Amazon hub in Hazelwood, MO, provide great service.

This is a pretty low number, to be honest. I expect Amazon is actively exploring alternatives to Rivian. At the very least they’re waiting for them to become cheaper.

I see them every where here in MI, I hope Rivian gets more substantial contacts to build these for other last mile carriers now that the Amazon exclusivity is gone. Seems like an important part of their business model that doesn't get enough attention.

To put things in perspective, Tesla sells over 400,000 EVs every three months. I sure hope Rivian and Amazon can get 100,000 vans on the road by 2030. ?

They are all over the front range here in CO. Every delivery at my business for the past year has been an EDV.

I don’t believe the delays with these are on Rivian’s side. The distribution centers need to have charging installed (lots of charging) and Amazon appears to be doing that at new warehouses first, not retrofitting older centers.

Rivian has a separate assembly line for the EDVs and can make them pretty quickly. That is why there is always a bunch of them sitting in the factory lot waiting for Amazon to pick them up.

Think about the impact this has had already: 800 million packages delivered by 15,000 EDVs! imagine that number with 100k EDVs out there. This is a big deal.
