Hi Everyone,

I love the interaction the form has with everyone giving information. My question is I can understand the importance of the wrap for protection, but has anyone done one for the color? Although the colors the Rivian come in are nice, has anyone wanted a different color and did it with a wrap?

Thanks

I don't think anyone really does it for protection, just to change the color or get that ugly flat primer look. For protection you'd just do a clear front.

Yeah, what is in my mind. Of the colors that Rivian offer I like the Forest Green and If I get it I would just get the "Self-Healing" PPF. But then at the same time I think of possible other colors, so I would get the silver color and then wrap on a color I like more. But I also hear that the color wrap is thinner then the protective. So am I correct to think that if I go the direction of the wrap color that I would need to get the PPF to protect the color wrap? Or am I over thinking this?

It’s not also just about changing color. You can wrap almost any surface and design the vehicle how you see it. Me, I think the S looks better without a black contrasting roof.

Understand that you are talking about two different things really.

A vinyl wrap is only 2-3 mil thick. Though it does provide some paint protection it is very, very slight. It’s really used for just a change of color not protection.

PPF is 8-10 mil thick and self healing. Its sole purpose is in the name. Paint Protection Film. It’s used just for that, though recently it does give you the option of changing the aesthetics. Now depending on the company PPF is offered in Gloss, Satin, Matte finishes and a few basic colors.

Yes, The color and the PPF are two different things. Part of the reason why I asked if I am over thinking the vinyl wrap.

Here is my though. If you go with a vinyl wrap, would you also do the PPF on top of it? I feel I am over thinking this.

Let's say I want the RT in a color of Candy Apple Red, just an example not that I want that color. That would require either a paint job or a vinyl wrap. If you do the direction of the vinyl, then would you do a PPF on top of the vinyl?

Thanks

Yes, you can ppf over the vinyl wrap. That would be a serious expense though. Do you off-road or travel regularly in areas where you are driving thru brush?

Yes, that is why I am asking people options. As for Off roading, I do a bit in my Crosstrek, which the RT will replace it, so it has a few scratches on the sides from hitting the desert.

I know about the expense of doing both a vinyl and PPF, part of the reason I am asking I really don't want to do both. As I mention in another reply, the Forest Green is nice color and if I would do that direction I would do the PPF in Matte.

BTW, Great set up on your RT1!

Thanks

You'd have to have some really serious paranoia to do both, or drive in some really horrible brush. You could have the paint buffed out 50 times before you'd pay for the vinyl. My truck already has Arizona pinstripes from off-roading. It's worse because it's so wide.

Now, most people seem to add ceramic on it, for all of the benefits it provides. I put that on every vehicle, but not the PPF.

First vinyl I've seen that makes me want it. Nice.

I've had my wrap since early January. I didn't ppf over. I've been offroad a few times so far and went thru our winter, but honestly my home driveway is worse. I have overgrowth I continually have to cut. I've gotten some marring down the sides, but interestingly enough, a magic eraser has done the trick every time so far. I've been quite impressed. (Yeah, I know magic erasers are like the worst for microplastics). The self-healing is nice too. I made the mistake of sticking my suction cup camera mount to the side in 95 degree weather. It left a huge ring in the vinyl. I thought it was screwed. I poured 200 degree water over it then parked it facing the sun and it completely went away.

I know, that is why I thought to ask people's options. I tend to over think things at times. I feel this might be one of them.

Thanks
