Hi all,

Picking up my R1T later today and thinking about getting the discount tires warranty that they offer for new cars. is it worth it?

Thanks

It’s worth it as a peace of mind especially on road trips / if you have 22” which have less sidewall compared to 20” which will handle potholes better.

Each tire runs $450 and I believe each certificate runs $75. My local discount mentioned they stock all the sizes which was important to me when going on road trips or considering 21” wheels which only has 1 tire option available anywhere.

I got it on my 20” All Terrains when we had no compact spare available.

The all terrains have a longer life which makes the cost of the certificates spread out over longer timeframe.

Here is a detailed discussion on discount tire certificates / my purchase experience and cost.

PSA: Discount Tire / America’s Tire will sell Road Hazard warranty and lifetime Road Force Balancing with free rotation if you have < 2,000 miles

I’ve only ever needed it for off road damage. I can’t even remember my last tire damage on a road. Probably 20 years ago. Certainly more than 10. How often are you experiencing tire damage? I’d never buy it for a vehicle that only sees road use.

Beware of Discount Tire (@Discount Tire) . Went there for tire rotation. Asked specifically if they knew how to lift a Rivian, have the jack pucks and know how to enable tire service mode. They said yes to all. Not five min after they start I notice they’ve lifted my truck with no pucks and directly on the plastic panels. As you can image the panels were damaged. I stopped them and asked them to use pucks. They said it doesn’t fit. I asked to see the pucks and they are plastic with no nipple. Thankfully I brought my own and tell them to use those.

I posted on this forum and someone from DT reached out and said the manager would call me. Never did even after several follow ups. I will never go to DT again.

Unfortunately, we get flats with all of our cars. R1s twice within a year and our tesla too.

I got the DT warranty. Had not had a flat in years then had two within a few weeks of getting my R1. One was bad enough to be replaced. Also, got the tyre kit. Because I am now prepared I don't expect a flat for the next two decades.

Flats are repaired free at Discount and some others. The road hazard is only for massive damage that requires a replacement.

Also, if you buy tires through Tire Rack, they include road hazard. You can have them sent to and mounted at Discount, who will try to sell you the certs anyway. But they are already covered. When I did the Rivian tires I ended up negotiating to get a discount (at Discount, lol) and basically got the certs free. Tire Rack and Discount are the same company and you can play them off each other. Oh, and the Tire Rack card gets you 5% off.

I've been using Discount Tire for 20+ years and every set of tires on each vehicle I pay for the certificates. I've probably had 5-6 tire replacements along with $500 or so in milage prorations over the years and consider it essentially even from an outlay/benefit.

The real reason I get them is for my wife and daughters. If something tire related happens wherever they are all they have to do is get to a Discount Tire. Everything is covered and little chance of being ripped off in my experience. From a damaged tire to tire pressure check I don't get a phone call.

We go to America's Tire (which is part of DT) and they are AMAZING. Before I took our R1T there, I double, triple & quadruple checked if they have the pucks. They did and said they do tires on Rivians all the time. I have been to the local one 3 times for rotation (5 wheel rotation) and PERFECT everytime.

Got the certificate a day ago for $360 for 4. Today got a screw close to the sidewall and has to be replaced. Cost another $90 for the certificate for that one tire. Guess it is already worth it
