Why is Rivian obsessed with the AT package??

Unfortunately this is not a factory size for gen 1’s and requires either new wheels or reprogramming the computer to think you have 21/22’s for that diameter. Not something the typical rivian owner would do. Gen 2 apparently has this size but none sold yet up to this point.

What do you mean, "none sold yet up to this point?" I just saw a Gen 2 R1S with 275/60R20s "out in the wild" a couple of days ago (the Wrangler Territory AT, base wheel/tire). Or do you mean that they aren't selling those wheels/tires in the gear shop yet?

They have the data. Maybe a large portion of people who buy the 20s also do the all terrain. This way they are filling a need.

Personally I have the 22s and don't really go off-road, unless you count NJ roads in the spring.

20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires get better range than the 22’s. My R1S large, quad, with 20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires is 7% more efficient than my T large, quad with 21’s.

What 20's did you put on? (wheels and tires?) I'm looking at getting 20's when my 21's need replacing and want the most efficient 20's wheels/tires combo I can find (within a reasonable price).

My S came with 22’s. I bought the 20 brights from Rivian, just the wheels, no tires. They allowed me to do this for $2222. The tires are 275/60/20 Pirelli AS plus 3. My S has averaged 2.48 mi/kwh over 6k miles. My T only got 2.31 mi/kwh with the 21’s. There are multiple threads on this so check them out. The most efficient 20 wheel would probably be from Martianwheels. Their 20 is lighter than Rivians and the most aerodynamic 20 I’ve seen available to Rivian’s.

If you currently have 21’s or 22’s and put on 20’s with 275/60’s you don’t have to reprogram. It’s 0.3% difference. Not to mention Rivian confirmed in future updates they are going to let owners change their tire size themselves in their vehicle.

I understand some people feel the risk is low, but personally, I will not take that risk especially because I would like to carry things in the truck besides just me. There are good XL+ options available anyway.

It’s not a AS tire. It’s a AT tire. Goodyear Wrangler AT tire. Not sure why Rivian advertises it as a AS setup.

Interesting, I was wondering what tire came with that wheel. And yes, the vehicle loses over 4% with that 20 inch wheel and tire over the 22s. That's not nearly as bad as the almost 12% hit for the AT package tire, but it is something.

The first Rivian’s shipped out with 22’s had 115H load index. 115H is fine with the Rivian. Multiple people have done it on this forum and there are even people running 113 Y on their S I’ve seen. Michelin has a new LTX m/s2 that has a 116 rating.

Thats because the Goodyear is a 33 inch tire, 275/60/20. The 34 inch tire is 275/65/20 setup was what they’ve always done.

Wheel styling and feel is very subjective, and everyone needs to get what's best for their preference, budget, and situation. Personally, in my case, I wanted 20" for the potential future tire selection and snow/off road capability. Of the stock choices, I was only interested in the 20" all-terrain selections based on style, but also considered the new 22" range. I ended up ordering the 20" darks.

This is my non-scientific and not particularly accurate math:

All terrain upgrade with 20" darks: $4000 (pre-march 20% voucher). Replace tires in 2+ years to something better.

if I got the 22" range, I'd be happy for a while then replace with aftermarket 20" wheels and new tires: about $3200 shipped for a style I like. Sell old range wheels for maybe $800, net cost $2400.

So for the All Terrain Upgrade package difference of $1600, I get factory forged wheels that I enjoy, the compact spare, underbody shields, built in compressor, and apparently Sand Mode--which is awesome (for me and my situation).

You can definitely do your own 20" package for cheaper, or cruise on 22's if that's how one wants to roll, but Rivian is probably just squirting out whatever combination their supply chain allows at any given time.

I believe they are only offered with standard battery packs, even on custom builds (which can’t have the AT package). These 20s come with 275/60R20 (33

Large and Max packs get the original 20” wheels with 275/65R20 Pirelli AT tires, now only possible to spec with the AT package (RUS, tow hooks, and spare tire included). In the past the 20” wheels could be spec’s with or without RUS and/or spare tire. I wish they had done it this way from the start, otherwise I wouldn’t have ended up with a truck without underbody shield (I had limited options when picking a demo R1T before leasing was made available in VT).
