OP is obviously trolling, but I’m not aware of any vehicles that offer free connectivity. On the other hand, I know of some who indeed charge for the basic smartphone functions we have and who charge for the driver assist features we get for free.

Are there really companies that offer free connectivity?

If horsepower doesn’t have anything to do with it, then what does “koolaid” have to do with it? It was an illustration of how ridiculous it is to compare the connectivity of all his vehicles over the last 10 years and I think you know that.

Rivian included that revenue in their IPO documents because it makes their future prospects more attractive to investors. Not because the “law required them to”. They could have added this idea at any point in the years since and they would not be violating any laws.

The “kindness“ is that we did know it was coming and Rivian has provided periodic updates since the IPO. Also that it’s optional. They could have required some level of payment from everyone, couldn’t they?

Sorry someone crapped in your cheerios this morning. Go touch some grass and ask someone for a hug.
Oh, I think we found the actual troll, folks lol. He’s an angry one! “Drinking the Koolaid” may be a new term to you. It’s not to most people. When you say a company does something required by law out of kindness, you are drinking the Koolaid.

And no, Rivian put those terms in the early docs because they wanted legal cover to charge for the functionality whenever they wanted to. If it wasn’t in there, they could not charge you now. Bread and butter stuff. Rivian didn’t do anything shady there.

There are a few that offer connectivity for 3-5 years. Ford. Kia. But not for life, as far as I know.

So after the IPO a company cannot legally add any services that might cost the customer money? Please back that up with some actual evidence. Post the law here. I bet companies that have been around for 60-70 years (before the concept of in vehicle connectivity was even dreamed of) will be very interested in that legal theory. :CWL:

We're onboard for the hot spot and the YouTube. The other stuff may be nice to play with. We have been so impressed with Opal (our R1T) that we want to do all of the technocratic stuff that she will be capable of. At 42 cents a day, We want Opal to doo all that she can do.

Yeah I had a couple of Mach E’s that had certain connectivity features, but not the to the degree of Rivian. No free hotspot, for example. But I sold them almost 2 years ago, so maybe something changed. I know that their hands free driver system is $600 per year though, and that would be a hard, hard pass for me. Rivian’s works really well IMO and it’s free for life.

Rivian does not have hands free driving. Ford offers the same features as Driver+, for free. It is called Copilot 360. It is only hands free BlueCruise that is a subscription.

When Rivian offers hands free driving, I bet it will be a subscription. My understanding is that Gen 1 vehicles will never get hands free.

It’s to pay for data over Rivian’s LTE.

Do you complain to ATT or Verizon: why do I have to pay for data on my cell phone?!

Great summary of the solutions provided.

Honestly I view this as a "sign up when I need it".

I don't need it when I am in metro areas, I have excellent 5G. I have solid music options through YouTube Music and various other options.

But if I go on a 6hr drive, I could actually use slightly better connectivity. So I will be a "buy the months I need" Too bad it cant be like $1 per 24hr period :D

Correct, I should have been more clear. Driver + isn’t handsfree, but you get like 15 seconds at a time if you need it which is fine for me. Personally, I found that it works about as well as BlueCruise for my daily driving purposes but without having to pay $600 per year. Ford’s non-BlueCruise lane keep assist function was absolutely horrible when I had my Mach E’s because it ping-ponged in the lanes like crazy. If I turned on BlueCruise, it worked much better and was really the only way I could get use out of the driver assist features on the highway. I wouldn’t go handsfree even if I could for safety reasons. So what I mean is that functionally speaking, I think BlueCruise was basically the same as Driver+ for my use cases, and that will be free forever. There won’t be automatic lane changes, true, but I wouldn’t trust it to do that anyway. We’ve seen too many crashes because people rely almost solely on the car to drive for them instead of using those features as merely an aid.

I think you are having a hard day. It's OK. Happens to trolls...

I said you cannot offer someone a service for free and then decide to charge for it later, without warning. This is because the customer would have understood the service to come with the purchase. Chevy did this to me - they cut off remote access functionality after 5 years. It wasn't in any of their docs at purchase. I got them to reinstate it for me.

Go outside, have a nice iced tea on the porch, come back in. I think you will feel better.

I’ve got nothing…. Let’s see… you bought a connected car and you want a premium connection for free?

Anyone got a spare AOL disc for the OP with the free trial option?

When did this happen? Rivian advertised free LTE for life? Legit question as i do not recall this. They had pitched some membership idea (at a cost) then announced they would break out the services (at cost) and announced a while ago that free-LTE would, as expected (I thought), end.

So, just to confirm... there is no specific law you are referring to? Because that is what you claimed :CWL:

Rivian has made clear from day 1 that everyone was receiving features for free but would eventually be asked to pay for some or all of them. That did not need to happen in the IPO to cover any legal liability you are referring to.
