They’ve been pretty clear what the connect+ will add and the effect of not subscribing (also similar to Tesla). They’ve also promised to install a paywall (at some point) for connectivity from the beginning.
If that irks you so much, then get a different vehicle. No reason to cry about your poor expectation management publically
Do you guys work for Rivian? I mean as I read through this forum I see the pattern. Who ever post a negative comment gets bashed. How do you get so much loyalty to Rivian? I would like to know so I can worship the company like you do. Suppressing negative comment or criticism will make this forum unhealthy for the long run.

I am absolutely in favor of negative posting where needed. . . I am literally not understanding the objection. Tesla charges now (after a trial, or at least they did when I owned my model Y) so what they did in the past to induce people to buy the cars is not relevant. If Rivian needs to sell cars and decides to say “hey here is free connectivity for life” and then renegs on that, I’ll be the first to complain. But they did not. They clearly announced forever ago that they were going to charge for connectivity. This was known since the beginning (if I am wrong on that, please let me know but I am not aware that they promised free cellular connectivity for life). They provide basic connectivity for free and permit tethering so you can use everything as is (pretty much) with your existing phone service.

Therefore because it was known and the price is both reasonable and not significant, I don’t understand the complaining. It isn’t that I am anti-complaining. I just don’t understand it here. People are so oddly up in arms about it (to me). I don’t work for Rivian . . .

I signed up immediately. The folks complaining about it make no sense. If you would like Rivian to continue to update software for a car you have purchased, why should you not pay for it - I believe it even includes a cellular hotpot.

I prefer a semi-SaaS model vs. the stangant tech packages of old and more than happy to pay nominal amount a year - in fact it's like two sandwiches a month. The folks complaining are beyond silly IMO...

Connect+ is not going to be a determinant for whether you keep getting over-the-air updates. Those will come whether you have Connect+ or not.

For the once per week I use my truck, I can do without it. If they reconsider the pricing, bringing it in line with Tesla, then just maybe I'd splurge and go all in for a year ;)
Hey!

It isn't clear to me what we get. It looks like we keep hotspot and we keep satelite maps.

I will probably pay for it, but it is kind of funny that they are charging for the map part (to be fair they always said they would charge for hotspot).

I will tell you, I was in the catskills at a Scout camp, and it really helped alot of people. One of the dads did a court hearing from the car this summer.

For what it’s worth, I’m staring down the barrel of my Hyundai Ioniq 5’s free subscriptions expiring. They broke it into three pieces for $99/year each (or you can pay less per year with multi-year subscriptions):
Rivian R1T R1S Signed up for Connect+ IMG_1178

Rivian R1T R1S Signed up for Connect+ IMG_1179

Rivian R1T R1S Signed up for Connect+ IMG_1180

There might also be a word of warning for those interested in Hyundai/kia vehicles…

Apologies if this post has typos, I’m on my phone.

I will not be signing up for Connect+. My wife has a new X5 that is enabled for CarPlay and has Sirius native. BMW does not charge her to use her Sirius account or CarPlay. I have generally been very happy with my R1S, but if the entertainment options become even more limited then I will also sell my car. There are plenty of $100K car options that don't try charge you for being able to listen to non-FM radio and provide superior optionality. Rivian navigation is a clown show. I thoroughly enjoyed submitting a ticket from the Rivian charger in Brattleboro, VT with the on screen directions routing me 3 minutes away.

Still mulling it over, but in all honesty, I’m saving ~ $100/mo in fuel costs (free charging at work). So, $12/mo still puts me $88/mo in the black.

If carplay and an XM antenna were key features for you, a Rivian probably wasn't the best choice. BMW charges for connectivity for anything that requires streaming data as well as many of their remote vehicle control features that we don't get charged for. I used to pay 99/year for my 3-series and that didn't include the semi-annual map updates.

Very few cars are giving cellular data connectivity away for free forever, and I don't know of _any_ that include streaming app integration. If it's just not worth it for you, that's fair... but nobody should have been misled that they wouldn't start charging eventually.
