I am not sure of the procedure but I can tell you Tesla has the same issue on Model Y. They had a TSB out for it with the same solution. Grease the axle splines.

Unfortunately for Rivian owners many folks here have had this service and report the noise coming back fairly quickly.

I am going to add this concern to my December service appointment. Will see what the Rivian Wizards say ?
Maybe every 7500 miles go in for a tire rotation and spline grease.

I think there are clearly issues with the half shafts where they connect with the drive unit. I have a lot of play in mine and the sound it makes sounds like everyone's videos. I bet if the splines are greased up, it may eliminate the issue temporarily, but the design is still bad. Need a half shaft replacement with an updated design. (Do we know a part # for the updated half shafts yet??)

Sound is one thing, but I also read that people with the excess play and sound over time develop a fluid leak at the drive unit, causing the need to replace the motors. I am not willing to wait for that to happen. Rivian will be please as punch when all these G1 models are passed warranty on the drivetrains.

I'm giving up on this one until there is a fix. It's just a noisy suspension that needs an updated design to the half-shafts. I really really really wonder how this never got addressed by engineers. I mean, service centers have canned answers since it's probably brought up so regularly.

Some of the band aids have helped, but to me it’s still there but hasn’t gotten worse. Luckily there is 8 yrs, 150k miles for me to keep nagging for a fix. ? I plan on upgrading or trading for a Gen 2 long before that anyway.

If I had the equipment, I'd put a rubber bumper on the ends of each half-shaft to eliminate the clunk. I'm sure it would eventually wear out, but that would fix it. I have 33 months left, so I'll probably hold out for gen 3.

Well that is exactly what this is: bad engineering.

Or bad assembly. A lot of people don’t have this issue.
That's fair. When I was mentioning bad engineering I was thinking of things like the jounce lines, and how they squeak on almost all G1s I've ever seen. Other suspension issues might be from assembly or even down-right bad luck.

I need to add those to my next service ticket too.

Some people have heard the clunk in every loaner and R1 they have rode in. So far I'm 2 for 2 in hearing it. It has been to VERY common.

The last time I complained loudly to the Austin service center, they allowed me to drive two different loaners. One had 2000 miles and was nice and tight and no play. The second one had 6000 miles and was a little looser but no clunking. But even I have new hubs and half shafts and still hear it 40% of the time, so it has to be on the motor side.

It's just odd that the quads and dual motor setup do it. Here's my Part # on my dual motor half-shaft.

8 years is the drivetrain coverage… which doesn’t include the suspension per my read of the warranty… so wouldn’t that be just 5 years (or in my case only 4)?

I am going to share my story that happened this week here, since there is a discussion on half shafts, clunking etc.

On Thursday my R1S (G1 Quad) started to make an awful clunking noise from the front left (see video).

I tried driving at different ride heights but that didn’t help and it just kept getting worse. Called Rivian service and went through the usual reset process. Very wonderful service agent (Taylor) quickly set me up with a tow to El Segundo and a rental car.

I was resigned to being without my car for a while so I was surprised to get a call the very next day saying my car was fixed and ready to be picked up. A true miracle.

I have attached the invoice that says what Rivian found. According to the front desk person this is a very common problem and was a result of incorrect sized hub bolts installed at the factory, which subsequently loosened and damaged the half shaft. They replaced both front half shafts and also the right front CV boot which was leaking grease.

I share this just to point others who might have this issue. For me, it came on very suddenly and I had not noticed clunking or or other noises before this week.

Also huge shout outs to Taylor on the phone and Ray in El Segundo service, who were amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
