Sorry to see this. Looks like chunking to me.

Tires wear fast on these vehicles due to weight and torque. It should not be chunking though under normal conditions.

Might want to consider replacing that tire for safety reasons.

That looks a lot like low pressure heat buildup damage. Run them low for 30 miles or so at low pressure on the highway and that can easily occur at over 100F outside. The inside is probably filled with rubber fallout as well.

These tires are done and should be replaced as they can fail at any time. Get off this forum to tire store immediately. 7000lb vehicles with failing tires is no joke.

I was at Costco yesterday trying to order the LTX M/S 2s but they’re on back order. I’m actually looking to change them right away, I’m not going to drive around like that. I’ll see if tire rack has them but it sucks that Costco doesn’t have them.

Thanks y’all for the advice!

I would try and make a claim with Rivian. Heat or not, one can make an argument these tires are defective.

Absolutely, I'm just making a call based on having done the same thing. Not an expert or a witness. Discount Tire would give a credit for those in my area 100%.

And yes the OEM Pirellis are lousy as you indicated. Mine are loud and worn 5-6 at 12K and will replace with 21 Michelin before the end of the year.

I am on my second set of 21's and have not seen anything like that. I got 41,000 on my first set of 21's. I have had a couple of punctured tires though.
How do the 22” sport tires perform?

that kind of chunking on a highway tire not seeing any significant offroad use is a defective tire. I also don't notice any other signs of significant underinflation or heat damage (for what that's worth based on a few pics over the internet).

Why the heck does my tires look like that?
anyone else has this issue?
All 4 tires look chewed up and really messed up. 15k miles on them…
The tire in the pictures is the rear driver side tire and it’s the worst one. I just noticed that it’s missing huge chunks of the treads, all the way to the wires.
Scary stuff!

I'm riding on them in Blue Ridge Mountains in Va., 29,000+, and still looking good for maybe another 15,000. I know I'm an anomaly. I rotated f to b twice, due for another. Mostly highway driving & some back roads, launching now and then. The tires in the pics look like they are dry, and you've been driving on some really rough, heavily brushed concrete.

What mode do you drive in most of the time? Especially around town? We live in AZ too, but had no problems like that. Our problems came from very bad wheel balancing which caused a vibration through the steering wheel so Rivian replace two tires on the front but the problem persisted so they ended up swapping all four tires as these were tires made for the specific vehicle. I think the early batch of these tires may have had design flaws. Our new set seems to be doing fine at 4k miles

Got 41k out of my stock 21’s when I took them off at 3/32"; wear was even all the way around and rotated every 6k… No issues out of them! 2.47 overall efficiency with several hundred miles of towing a 7k# boat… I put on a set of used stock 20’s w/the AT Pirelli and running them for the winter before I put on a set of AS on the new wheels…

I've seen worse on 4wd driven vehicles with large chunks missing. Pirellis have never been my tire of choice though those are still serviceable. Nice to have new tires though.

Thank you all for your feedback. I guess the hot weather is the culprit. I’ve never seen anything like it on any of my other vehicles.

I went on a dirt road once and did some drifts but nothing that will cause that.
I also live in AZ and my 21s lasted 25k miles, without that kind of damage. I appears they are separating, my trailer tires do that when sitting in direct sunlight.
