Cracked Windshield...Again...What a nightmare!

Hey All,

We are dealing with our second cracked windshield. Has anyone had any luck getting the windshield replaced, and recalibrated, through a company other than the Rivian SC? The soonest appointment is months away and they are unable to tell us how long they will keep the vehicle (it's not like it needs diagnosing, it's a cracked windshield!). We've tried going through a certified body shop...they are all very responsive and polite, but don't want to deal with the Rivian windshield because Rivian hasn't given them the ability to calibrate. So even if we have it replaced by a certified body shop we still have to wait for Rivian SC appointment to calibrate the windshield.

I've been a HUGE fan of this vehicle, but man...it is a really poor customer experience dealing with their service team.

I haven't done this myself, but just playing around on Safelites website and it appears they can do Rivians.

I went into a safelite shop and they laughed at me when I asked if they work on Rivian yet…..

I haven’t had to do a replacement (yet), but when I had a chip repaired earlier this year (March) at Safelite, the tech told me they can calibrate Rivians. That was one location and one person so I have no idea if it’s true or not.

Call the ones near you and ask if they can do calibration. Only option unfortunately.

I sold my Rivian back in Sept '24, but right before then I had a windshield replaced through Safelite. Their mobile dept came to my house to do it.

However, I did have to take it to Rivian service center for a $85 calibration. Was able to get an appointment just a few days out.

The process ended up being a lot less painful than I was expecting.

Yeah, about a year ago we did it through the Chelsea SC. It wasn't seamless, but certainly easier than it is today. They have shipped a ton more vehicles and haven't added any service capacity...I'll keep calling around to see who has the calibration software.

I'm dealing with this myself right now. Reported the broken window yesterday. First Rivian SC appointment is February 14th. I have Safelite coming to my house on Saturday to replace the window but they say I still need Rivian to recalibrate. Maybe some Safelite locations can recalibrate but the Safelite coming to my house in Prescott AZ cannot. I may be driving for 3 months without calibration -- whatever that means.

We had a cracked windshield that happened in early August. I made an appointment and the earliest was Oct. 4th. About a week later the S.C. (Sacramento) called and said "We can get you in whenever you want?". So, we took it in about 2 weeks after it happened.

I would make and appointment and then ask if there is any sooner appointments.

I'm not sure why Rivian hasn't addressed this and have Safelite 100% onboard. Ridiculous. On a side note, are there features that won't operate properly without calibration? I imagine everything works fine, it's just not 'calibrated' for distance, etc.?

My experience:

Make an appointment with Rivian now even it’s months away. Check back on the app multiple times a day. They might have an earlier appointment available if someone no longer needs it.

Get windshield protection film. Ive had my R1T for about 2.5 years and after the first rock took out my windshield early on, I had a windshield protection film applied. Until two weeks ago, I had no problems despite multiple hits

Then on a recent roadtrip while driving through LouisianaI, I took a big hit off a dump truck that chipped the glass through the film but…. It was fixed by safelite with a window repair, over the film. I have no doubt that rock would have destroyed my windshield, and I credit the film for multiple other potential saves.

I had the windshield film applied by Luxe Automotive in SLC. It was under $1000 if I recall, and it paid for itself a few times over. I highly recommend the film for R1s.

Windshield protection film worth looking into. Around $600. ExoShield, STek or XPEL.

Just got a deep rock strike that cracked the windshield this weekend. In MA we have $0 deductible windshield replacement, but the service center (Chelsea) will not work with insurance so they directed me to a certified collision repair shop as noted by @jemkewl

I reached out to a local glass shop and will reach out to local safelite to see if they can calibrate a Rivian yet.

Quite standard that Rivian nor Tesla will directly work with insurance, you pay them, file with your insurance and they reimburse you, have done it with both companies.
