Gen2 Dual Max Impressions from a 2020 Model Y owner

Picked up a Dual Max last week in Denver.

Good:

1. Build quality seems better
2. Interior is nicer
3. Other than that grill on the dashboard with a minor rattle, things feel quiet and solid inside.
4. Not supporting Elon's latest antics (although maybe it's good to not put RJ on a pedestal either)
5. Mobile app is nice and simple and to the point. And it's not hassling me for recommending to people like Tesla currently is.
6. Ride is definitely smoother and less harsh than the 2020 Y.

Bad:

1. Software feels a bit clunkier than Tesla. Not legacy automaker bad, just not quite as quick and intuitive.
2. Profiles (seat/memory) aren't working at all. They don't save/remember or restore settings properly. Hard and soft resets didn't change anything.
3. Wireless charging mat doesn't work at all (I'm not sure the key card does either for that matter).
4. The heat pump seems to take way longer than the MY's heat pump to pre-heat. It's taking 30 minutes to go from 30 degrees or so in the cabin to 55 degrees (this is without the car plugged in). I'm not sure what others' experiences are with this.

I've created a service ticket for 2-4, but earliest in Denver is the 2nd week of January. I'm a little disappointed to have to immediately file service tickets (had to do the same with Tesla) at this much higher price point than my MY. On the plus side, after I got the initial issues with my MY corrected, it has been a good car. I have no reason to believe the R1S will be any different.

My charging mat hasn’t worked since day one either. Just bought the TWraps one so hopefully that clears that up.

we still love our Y. I laugh at people trying to compare the two vehicles. Y has a harsh ride? Yeah it’s 60k cheaper lol.

I might be behind on the newer R1T and R1S models (Gen 2), but I do not think they have heat pumps; neither did Gen 1.

Gen 2 most definitely has a heat pump.

I can also echo the sound system complaints. We got the premium audio option in the R1S but I don't think it sounds quite as good as the MY's system. I'm not sure how much of that can be solved with software but one can hope!

Yeah this is quite annoying, or it seems like the settings it does remember may not be the settings I Saved at. I find I need to switch to my wife's driver profile and then back to mine again, probably every 2 or 3 times I drive the car.

Since I wrote this, Rivian recommended I do calibration in the service menu and that seems to have addressed my problem.

I swear i was being gaslighted by my Rivian... I would get in and feel like i'm an inch closer to the steering wheel than I was before.

Rolled on a really easy obstacle on Daniel Trail at Uwharrie National Forest after finishing the toughest section. Essentially I was frustrated that I had broken some glass and sustained trail damage, so was like "F&ck it! I will let ABLS take care of it" and did not take my time adjusting for the best line between a large rock and a tree. Rolled it doing like maybe 1 MPH; felt tippy, but like I was gonna return to 3-wheels on ground from two when it went the other way.

SRS Curtain Airbags deployed (could actually watch it happen) and driver's side took extensive body damage. A good samaritan with a winch got it back rubber-side down, finished Daniel, and drove home. Runs and drives great, but looks super rough.

Pictures below are right after returning home (long drive from Uwharrie). The hood flew up right after I got on the road; I had inspected the engine and thought it was latched properly.

Rivian R1T Launch Edition 34" wheels (worst performing at Uwharrie mainly due to extreme weight and breaker angle)
