hmmm... So, a 250 pound man would have to be careful since the stepping up and potential bouncing temporarily adds even more weight. And such a man wouldn't be able to carry much weight with him to put up on a roof rack.

That’s what it says, though insideevs podcast and review shows himself stepping up and down and he seems to be around 250

I'd be willing to bet that it's limited by the moment applied to the hinge. If I were to hazard a guess, the 250 lbs would be at the far end of the door from the truck when the door is open. Hugging close to the door should have a lot more capacity. I'd be pretty surprised if it was limited by shear.

300 lbs if you're already up there. 250 lbs if you're stepping up from the ground.

Excellent point. Either way, it may make sense for larger people and anyone lifting heavy objects onto the roof, when possible, to actually put one foot into the tunnel itself so some weight is distributed there instead of onto the gear tunnel hinge. And the closer to the hinge the second foot can be, maintaining a safe standing posture, the better.

There's a factor of safety. If you put 251 (or 301) lbs on there, its not going to fail. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't at least 1.5-2x the published limit.
