Back in 2019 Rivian had a patent for a battery pack in the bed next to the cab. Do you think that'll come to fruition?

I doubt it. Logistically, how would it be cooled? It would have to be hardwired in somehow so it isn't like it would be something you could add and remove regularly. I think, much like the Cybertruck's range extender, it will never see the light of day. It doesn't make sense.

Was that the original plan for the Max pack? If so, I think that config is baked in now, so no really compelling reason to develop/release it (though I'll be first in line if they do make it).

My truck choice was Rivian Max Pack versus Cybertruck w/ Range Extender, so I'm always chasing the most battery I can get (but no, no I"m not interested in the GM platform).

Max pack was supposed to take up the entire space under the R1T, and have another module humped on top where the storage currently is under the rear seats. It would be cool if Rivian eventually showed it, even if they never intend on producing it.

I believe it was estimated to weigh almost 2000 lbs based on the size of it, so it would require a SC visit and a forklift or crane to install, uninstall. Not very practical. Same criticism applies to the Cybertruck version that will probably never be made either...

I want to be able to drive over to the SC and rent a pack to be put in the frunk, as needed for trips.
This is the way!

No up front costs for the vehicle owner, and the RE packs are not sitting around discharged for long periods of time not being used.

None of that is impractical in any way. I've loaded and unloaded a couple thousand pounds of things many times.

I throw out my back just installing a RTT, think of how installing this would destroy your body. It has got to be a SC service.

Right, yes, of course, that's what I said. In theory it could be done in just a few minutes. No different from me loading something with the right equipment.

What do you mean it won’t be made? Elmo is already taking deposits and we all know he always delivers on his promises. Wow I can’t believe I made it through that sentence without laughing hysterically.

Tesla confirmed that their range extender needs to be bolted to the frame, such that it doesn't crush through the cabin in a collision. I think any kind of "swappable battery pack" would need similar treatment. Meaning it's not as easy as dropping a cooler into a frunk, plugging in a suicide cord and calling it a day.

An additional battery pack would most certainly take away from payload, so even if it were only 800-1000 pounds (to provide possibly an extra 100kwh) there wouldn't be a lot of capacity left for people/stuff, not to mention trailer tongue weight.
