If the reliability is dead last and owner satisfaction is in first place, does that mean:
  • Rivian is doing an exceptional job at keeping people happy?
  • Rivian makes a product that is unreliable but exceptional in every other way?
  • Rivian owners are dumb?
Which are true? ;)
Rivian's product is very unique, appears high quality, and the owners feel special since the vehicles are still relatively rare, so they're satisfied. There are lot of uber-luxury products that check these boxes even if they're unreliable as can be, and owners still love them.

It seems you generally either get a solid well made one, or get one that has problems almost from day 1. I haven't seen many reports of major problems developing after 5 to 10k miles other than the dreaded 12v battery failure (seems that can strike at any time). I think that may contribute to the first in owner satisfaction and last in reliability in this survey.

Consistency and QC seems to be their biggest struggle. It seemed they were finally getting Gen 1 dialed in, only to have to repeat the inconsistencies and struggles with Gen 2.

All I can say is, after 4 months of ownership, I’ve had 0 major problems, and only a handful of minor ones (Apple Music died on me once, and I had thumping noise related to the rear passenger door locking).

I’ve taken two long trips so far (400 miles to NY, and 500 to SC), and it drove flawlessly. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones, and I’m grateful for it, because scheduling service would be impossible. I reached out about my Power Tonneau cover, and the earliest available time is late February…

13 service visits and probably 30-40 items that have needed addressing in 2 years leading to a buyback in my case. I’m not surprised at all. I’m going to stay away for a while and revisit when the R2/R3 get released!

Well I have the same comment I had from the last one. I don't necessarily disagree with the Rivian score so much as I want to see the error bars. Consumer reports included error bars long ago, now they deleted them.

Further, we see this note at the bottom:

We had insufficient data to create brand rankings for Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Lucid, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Polestar, Porsche, and Ram.
This is only for 2022-2025 vehicles, only R1 vehicle. So this rating is based on roughly R1 100k vehicles, that's enough data for CR

Chrysler sold 120k Pacificas in 2023 (so 300-400k vehicles during the period?)

Dodge sold sold 220k vehicles in 2022, so roughly 600-700k vehicles during the period.

Land Rover sold 56k in 2022, so roughly 150k or so during the period

Porsche sold 75k in the US, so roughly 225k during the period. And 320k worldwide for 2023, putting them at near a million during the period if you expand worldwide.

So why is Rivian on this chart but those other guys are not?

It says WE had insufficient data from those brands. Maybe they rely on user submissions. And maybe Rivian users love Consumer Reports ?

Heh, which goes back to error bars, their data is very clearly not even close to related to delivered vehicles. It's either heavily skewed by a few bad early vehicles, a few disgruntled owners, or both.

If their methods were valid they wouldn't have to exclude those other brands

I had 40K miles with my last Rivian and no major problems. So far so good with my new R1S as well.

I think the buyers of "those brands" expect them to be piles of crap, and kinda just accept the minor issues or move on. Rivians tend to be peoples first intro to EVs and probably the most expensive car purchase at the same time. This gives a lot of people high expectations that just aren't met. When one thing goes wrong, you tend get picky with everything else. I know this is where I'm coming from.

Example... I just got a brand new work car given to me. 25 miles on brand new explorer. It has rattles, misaligned panels and sounds like a wind storm is coming through the drivers /passengers windows. They've made like a few million of those and can't get it perfect. I still love it because my expectations were low and I get free gas.

Ford was kind enough to circle the problem with their vehicles on the front grille.

The early adopter fanaticism will wear off quickly once the masses start purchasing the vehicles and realize this isn't a set it and forget it Toyota. I think most of us here will agree we have dealt with some sort of issue with the vehicle, and since most here are very techy, have been able to work with Rivian either with service or the eventual software updates to resolve many of them. The average driver doesn't even remember to change their oil and drives around with the low gas light on. Communicating with service using the app will be a foreign concept. Going to an EV will be a challenge for them.
Most people that drive in my truck enjoy it but have no desire to get an EV and play with different apps and do calculations just to drive it. They don't want to arrive at a charger during a trip, plug in, realize that it's not working and move to another spot hoping that it works and sit there for 20-30 minutes. I enjoy it but completely understand why EVs aren't for everyone. Charging infrastructure stinks but so happy that I can use a lot of Tesla locations but it seems like many are still offlimits and only for Tesla in my area.

I made a trip the other day and was plagued with EV connect issues and EA chargers being full. Tesla was out of the way for me but I had no choice. I can't stand EA and do everything I can to avoid them because they are always chock full of Kia's that I assume get some sort of free charging. I'll happily pay the monthly membership for Tesla to avoid their competitors who are just so inferior.

Hey hey hey... I was driven home from the hospital in a Mach 1 and have never owned anything else besides Fords... except for the Pantera I almost bought last year... and of course the Rivian.

Pantera is on my list....

When I was a teen my dad had a couple of friends with them...one white and one black. Wicked cars.

Not an easy car to buy....and a fair amount of potential issues to watch for.

If I get serious about one...I would have to brush up on the pain points again...
