what is Mobile Eye?

are our Gen 2s not yet really using any of the updated telemetry hardware ?
There's a whole thread that outlines it. But mobile eye is an off-the-shelf driver assistance system. Tesla generation 1 autopilot used it, dozens of legacy automakers, and gen 1 Rivian.

Rivian was hoping to augment and add on to the abilities of mobil eye in generation 1. But the system was too locked down, and that's why they never were able to fulfill on the promises they made. They took a gamble on what was possible and found that they couldn't fulfill.

Gen 2, for that reason has a proprietary system. They have complete control over everything and can do whatever they want. The problem is creating a new machine learning system requires an immense amount of training data. So Gen 2 is also equipped with a mobile eye system. Granted, the mobile eye system in Gen 2 is a newer, higher end system than that of gen 1, so it can do far more. So until rivian has enough training data to confidently hand over the reins to their own system, we're using the redundant mobile eye system.

Just a personal observation that I have made:

Have you ever noticed that the lane lines on the driver display never quite line up with the vehicles shown around you? I suspect that the lane lines are from the mobile eye system, and the visualization of the vehicles around you is from the rivian system. The visuals have drastically improved very quickly with each successive update. So I think that all of the data that they are gathering from the fleet of gen 2 drivers out there is helping the system to more accurately and quickly identify objects and vehicles

Do you think it's possible they are integrating the Rivian system with the Mobileye? What I mean is right now the Mobileye is running the ADS but could the lane gap thing where it slows down or speeds up to make a lane change be Rivian's?

Since we're on a rant anyway, I also suspect that's why we don't get regen on cruise or Highway assist. Mobile eye does not understand what Regen is. It's an off-the-shelf system meant to fit any vehicle. So all it knows is "brake"

Possible? Running both systems at the same time and using one to assist the other is exactly what rivian and tried to do with gen 1. I suspect that nothing has changed with mobile eye being extremely locked down.... But who knows?

I have watched my wheel torque meter things and swear they show regen during highway assist/cruise. I will have to watch again.

The power meter absolutely does show regen during cruise. But it's a lie. Put your foot behind the brake pedal and you can feel it moving. Do the same when you're in one pedal I'm coming to a stop, and you'll notice that the brake pedal doesn't move at all until you are just about to come to a complete stop

That is interesting. I only use mine in lighter traffic so once it starts needing to slow for traffic I tend to take over. I just prefer to regulate speed, lane position, etc...in traffic.

I have heard some say they killed rear brake pads using adas...so that makes sense. My pads all looked brand new at my last rotation at 49k.

Really interesting if there truly is zero regen during adas functionality and yet Rivian shows regen on the power/torque displays.

It’s been found in other EV that regen isn’t the best for maintaining highway speed. Many people disable OPD so that they can try to use as little power input as possible or lightly coast occasionally instead of quickly cycling between power and regen.

That said, I haven’t used my R1T cruise control that much. If its also trying too hard to maintain an exact speed and tapping the brakes often, that’s also not efficient.

Back to the original concern, really need this implemented. Have this error constantly now that it’s winter in Maine

That is also interesting. I have had my G1 thru 2 winters now in Wisco and started into 3rd. Although I get it occasionally, it has only been a total of maybe 5 times.

Makes me wonder what G2 is doing differently to result in you seeing it constantly.

I’m more interested in how would they make it work. Putting anything metal in front of radar will block radio waves.

To me, sounds more like a wish list item that did not get implemented.

FWIW - I have a buddy with a gen 1 here in Utah and he's told me that he has to clear snow pretty consistently when it's coming down

Next snow storm I'm definitely going to be doing some experiments

Heated radars are not a new thing - a lot of german cars do it iirc

I wonder if there is some type of application you can apply to the front so that snow has more difficulty sticking?

So maybe some varience from early to later vehicles. It does seem some on going cost cutting and Covid supply chain issues were happening possibly thru the whole G1 build.

Mine is an early one and for the most part that system has worked thru most snowfalls without issue.
