There's a whole thread that outlines it. But mobile eye is an off-the-shelf driver assistance system. Tesla generation 1 autopilot used it, dozens of legacy automakers, and gen 1 Rivian.what is Mobile Eye?
are our Gen 2s not yet really using any of the updated telemetry hardware ?
Rivian was hoping to augment and add on to the abilities of mobil eye in generation 1. But the system was too locked down, and that's why they never were able to fulfill on the promises they made. They took a gamble on what was possible and found that they couldn't fulfill.
Gen 2, for that reason has a proprietary system. They have complete control over everything and can do whatever they want. The problem is creating a new machine learning system requires an immense amount of training data. So Gen 2 is also equipped with a mobile eye system. Granted, the mobile eye system in Gen 2 is a newer, higher end system than that of gen 1, so it can do far more. So until rivian has enough training data to confidently hand over the reins to their own system, we're using the redundant mobile eye system.
Just a personal observation that I have made:
Have you ever noticed that the lane lines on the driver display never quite line up with the vehicles shown around you? I suspect that the lane lines are from the mobile eye system, and the visualization of the vehicles around you is from the rivian system. The visuals have drastically improved very quickly with each successive update. So I think that all of the data that they are gathering from the fleet of gen 2 drivers out there is helping the system to more accurately and quickly identify objects and vehicles
