Hello all, new member, first post.
I had to reject taking delivery of my 2025 Gen 2 R1S yesterday as the interior option was not what I expected. I worked with the rep going back and forth with various in-stock options for the dual ("not dual standard", the basic trim level one with the small battery pack), but the dual with "max" battery pack (to take advantage the current EV upgrade rebate). My interior choice was the "included" black mountain + dark ashwood. The only available interior options on the dual with large or max battery is black mountain+dark ashwood or Ocean cost +dark ashwood.

What was present on delivery day was the interior of black mountain only no +dark ashwood trim, the trim was the basic "cheap" looking vinyl wrapping.
I'm confused because the basic interior black mountain without the wood trim is "only" available to order on the basic dual standard with the small battery pack.

Question 1: How in the heck did the max battery get into a vehicle with the basic trim without the +dark ash wood?
Question 2: For those of you following Rivian for a while or had purchase last fall was there a period in time or a period of transition from gen 1 to gen 2 where the black mountain "without" +dark ashwood could be ordered on the mid and/or upper trim levels with large or max battery packs.?
Her are some pics of the interior I was expecting vs what the vehicle was equipped with.
Thanks for some feedback in advanced.

That's a screwup for sure. There are a lot of reasons to reject delivery, but this is a legit one. I'm sure they could fix it, but it would require an extensive service center visit, andI don't know if there is anything else in the trim differences that you may not have noticed (e.g., is the carpeting or accent materials/colors different? Maybe there is some circuitry or electronics programmed to the LFP pack too, that may cause problems later on). Maybe not, but best to get one that you know is built correctly.

Yeah, you made the right decision to reject delivery, the wood definitely makes the interior. It's also not just a quick dash swap, it's also all the door cards and a few other things as they all carry some portion of the wood trim theme.

It didn't used to be the case that Black Mountain was exclusive to the base standard dual. That's a more recent change. When I got mine that was the "free" option. Black mountain + dark ashwood was like $1700 or so, and Ocean Coast + Dark Ashwood was around $2000.

But even so, Rivian ALL THE TIME will produce combinations of things that don't exist in the configurator.

There's actually another thread on here discussing how Rivian Blue and Red Canyon are no longer options for dual standard, but there are dual standard vehicles in the shop in those colors.. Back when I got mine there were also dual max R1Ss in the shop that had the base 20" wheels that are supposed to be exclusive to dual standard..

They change up options on shop vehicles all the time, probably based on current supply when they are in production.

But yes. I agree with your choice. Definitely get the wood. It feels much nicer. I'm kinda disappointed they got rid of the suede headliner on the dual motor vehicles.

Also, did you look at the 3rd row cupholder area? Did they get rid of the compartment? I heard on newer dual motor build's it's now just 2 cupholders with a USB C in the cupholder and no compartment. Not sure if that's ALL dual motor, or just dual standard

There was a time where the "vegan leather" dash option was available on all Gen 1 trims toward the end of production. I'm not sure if that translated to the Gen 2's for a brief period before being further segmented and a default option on the dual standard.

Good call, "buy once, cry once" as one of my astute colleagues always says!

Let this be a lesson: the employees at the delivery center are not on your side. They are trying to move metal. They will not inspect the car rigorously like a dealership would. Or even inspect the car at all, as I have witnessed.

I still think it's crazy that they don't let you drive the vehicle before signing for delivery...

I opened this with the intention of writing something snarky or mean about entitlement or something but after reading this, I would have rejected delivery too.

What did Rivian say? Are they going to get you a different one? What interior is listed on your purchase documents?

Manufacturing mistake. In 2015 BBC produced a series, with James May as host, on how the Mini was built. It's on Amazon Prime Video. In it, you can see how multiple trims of cars are built on the same assembly line. And from that, you can imagine how mistakes could happen.

Curious what the window sticker says - if it's SUPPOSED to be with or without the wood.

I know that quite often Rivian will make vehicles with combinations of options that are not available in configuration. And they do so on purpose because they need to get rid of stock of this wheel, or they swap interior colors because that's more available, etc.

At least OP didn’t fall for the “we promise to fix this after you take delivery” line

I've heard too many horror stories of dissatisfaction with their Rivian and frankly the whining is tiresome. Then there are the really serious problems that are almost impossible to get fixed after the car is yours. Add to that the fact that you can't really experience the vehicle before accepting it. People shouldn't feel railroaded into accepting their vehicle. If there is any doubt, refuse it. This is something I didn't do myself, but I was lucky and my Rivian is very solid.

I was completely blown away when I took delivery of mine that the policy was setup this way.

Honestly, I wouldn't have taken delivery if they had let me drive it ahead of time (It had a HORRIBLE shake for the first 250mi - Service replaced all 4 tires, rebalanced and realigned the truck). Those first miles I had what can only be described as the WORST case of buyers remorse ever.

It's an absurd policy.

Just checked the configurator and the app is correct that the dual max comes with wood as standard. They had made all dual motor adventure turns come with vinyl as standard and then up charge $700 to get wood. Wonder why they didn’t stick with that and make some more money.
