Literally this. I did feel a little dirty at Inyokern doing it. Then realized Tesla subscription price plus a combo meal while I waited was the same price as RAN charging.

More like road to “I’ll use Tesla with a subscription”. lol

The ever present misconception that an electric car is so efficient because gas contains 33.7kwh per gallon. The difference between pure fact and the reality of how energy extraction actually works.

20mpg at $4/gal = $0.20/mile
2mi/kwh at $0.68/kw = $0.34/mile

Do the math and that equates to $6.80/gallon, not $22.
Thanks for mathing that out for us but it still proves their point that an ICE vehicle would be cheaper to fuel with those rates. Which is a shame, they are really shooting themselves in the foot.

Your math is WAY off. Assuming my R1t would get 20MPG with a gas engine and I get 2.5mi/Kwh, it would take 8 KWH to go 20 miles. Even at $0.68/Kwh, that's $5.44. I agree that's not great but far from $22. How did you even arrive at that?
They are just taking into account the units of energy in a kWh versus a gallon of gas and comparing the price of each based on unit of measure.

They are not taking into account the difference in efficiency of the two different technologies. That is where the comparison breaks down in traveling cost..

I have no problem paying higher than gas rates for the occasional road trip with fast charging. My home charging rates are a fraction of what I would pay for gas, plus the reduced maintenance saves both money and time compared o an ICE vehicle.
It depends on where you live and how you charge, but for me TCO is skewed heavily in favor of EV.

I'm glad you're in a good spot to pay higher fuel costs, but given the fact that gas prices were a huge factor in swinging a national election, I think they would do more for the cause by keeping those prices as dirt cheap as possible until they hit a wider market tipping point.

Because you didn't use a gallon! You used a quarter of a gallon. You said so yourself, 8kw and it cost you $5.

You are mixing the efficiency of the vehicle with cost of the fuel.

Please tell us about the mythical 100% efficient engine that only used a quarter gallon of fuel because of its perfect energy extraction. You’ll be one of the richest men on the planet when you bring that to mass production.

A Rivian size truck that uses a gallon of gas to drive 20 miles only uses about 10kwh of energy for propulsion, the other 23kwh is wasted as heat and other by products.

No he is making a real life comparison of the value of the energy. That is what matters if the premise is it is too expensive to drive an EV over ICE.

Indeed the cost per mile is ultimately the measure on the ground. I think dcfc providers just do the simple math and will charge to the cost of gasoline unless competition intervenes.

People also seem to be missing the fact that an R1T equivalent ICE truck would get like ˜8-12mpg.

I get free charging at work (4 hour limit) with which has accounted for ˜8,000 miles. I was absolutely shocked to find out this would only be about $350 if I charged at home instead. This equates to ˜$1800 if I drove a 12mpg 835hp ICE truck at $2.79/gal

Something like a Kia telluride would be half the fuel cost and no long fueling stops. Even with my high @$$ electric cost up here, at least my home charging is still a "savings" vs ICE.

This assumes an 800 miles. which is probably about as far as most people would road trip, regardless of distance or battery size (range) the cost per mile would be the same.

Anything above $0.32/Kwh makes gas, at the current price of gas, the lower cost travel options vs DCFC

Rivian R1T R1S Rivian now charging $.68 per kwh 1739800689751-6f

One gallon of gas is 33.7kwh. just multiply the two numbers.
While that is correct, that would be if you're converting gas into 1 Kwh of ENERGY. that is not the way to truly convert mil/Kwh into MPG. Most cars can go >25miles on 1 gal of gas, but EVs only ~2 miles on 1 kwh.
