Do you not use the cruise control either?
I use cruise control but always with a hand on the wheel and eyes up paying attention. This 'hands off read a book' stuff is just not safe in my opinion too many things can happen.

Since you're using Tesla as a shining example of customer satisfaction, and making good on promises...

Did Tesla keep their original preorder pricing of the first roadster? No, because it cost more than they projected to build. Did they eat the cost? Nope, they passed it straight on to the reservation holders.

Did Tesla ship a 500 mile Tri motor cybertruck for the promised 59k? No, becuase it cost too much to build and the battery even with the "pack in the back" can't deliver that range, and is an additional 16k on top of the 100k

Did Tesla milk owners on FSD promises for nearly a decade? Yup.

Did Rivian honor preorder pricing despite the need to increase prices by over 20%? Yup.

Did Rivian have to deal with a supply chain shortage and have to pay a premium to suppliers die to no relationships/low volume? Yup

Does Rivian owe us a full redo of the hardware to make good on that missed feature? I don't think so. But I do feel they should try to bring it closer to what was expected without a hardware swap.
This dude just pushing everyone to comma.ai. He’s probably getting a kickback from it

I've said it before, this is something Rivian needs to get ahead of. This will be an easy litigation, one that Rivian will lose. Well they would quickly settle out of court or try to.

Promises were made. Those promises may have enticed people to buy their product. All it takes is one and it will quickly turn into a class action lawsuit.

If you are so confident, why aren’t you doing it?

Because I don't engage in that sort of thing. I sit back, watch and laugh.

I love my Rivian overall but I just found this in the Wayback machine and wanted to revisit and show some of the newcomers that we were, in fact, promised much more advanced autonomous driving in Gen 1 vehicles than what was ultimately delivered. I know they have their excuses, but I can't help but feel that this is wild false advertising on Rivian's part. When Tesla faced this situation, they provided FREE hardware upgrades to the next gen ADAS hardware for older models.

Step it up Rivian!!!

WE'LL TAKE THE WHEEL, YOU TAKE IN THE SCENERY.
Level 3 autonomy will be available on every Rivian vehicle. By allowing you to take your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road, you’ll get to see more of the world as you cruise through it.

That could also be interpreted as “every current vehicle”. It’s not always possible due to hardware restrictions nor would it be viable to upgrade hardware just to bring along previous vehicle generations into the infinite future

I'm not, I'm just an owner disappointed in Rivians crappy ADAS. To the extent I've promoted Comma AI, which btw you brought up in this thread not me, it's been at my own time and substantial expense contributing to the development getting it ported over for Rivian, spending thousands to finally achieve something close to Rivians false promises. I was going to sell the Rivian for a Cadillac IQ with Supercruise so I'm glad at least I have another option. Still doesn't change the fact that Rivian abandoning Gen 1 and completely overhyping the driver assistance capabilities when they were sold is BS.

I take it as whoever wrote that on Rivian didnt use the appropriate definitions. Eyes off would require some sort of cabin monitoring and never recall seeing that come up in the early literature and I booked mine back in early 2022.

Your link also mentions LIDAR which none of us have. I hope they do that for R2s and R3X. You would know if we had the system via that front snorkel. I think Tesla oversold their ability to hit FSD with cams only. The Chinese have had alot of success with FSD using Lidar, sonar, and cameras. I dont think Tesla's version will ever hit FSD without LIDAR. Same for Rivian. We can get handsfree, eyes free would mean Gen 2s have an internal camera to monitor for people falling asleep (cant intervene if alerted). Gen 1s dont have that.

I didnt buy the truck for the ADAS but it is useful. Utility, look, and comfort were my priorities. I do wish Gen 1s got auto-turn. I dont see why the cameras are the limiting factor. If its processing then they really did mess up Gen 1 if what they put in cant handle lane change.

My Gen 1 R1S does have an interior camera, but they said it was positioned wrong and they found out after the fact it was not capable of driver monitoring to replace the capacitive touch as they originally intended.

I agree. I do feel like Rivian has over promised and under delivered in this area. My 2018 Model 3 can do a lot more than my 2022 Rivian.
I mean, if we are playing that game.... My 2016 Model S with original Mobile-eye platform can do more than any current Rivian.....

And if you jam an orange into the steering wheel, it becomes upgraded to Level 3.

Autonomous driving without LIDAR is a pipe dream. ADAS if you’re not Waymo is downright dangerous. I know Rivian drivers like their gadgets, but this one you’ll have to give up on.

If you are dissatisfied with Rivian or your vehicle I have an idea. Trade it in and get something else. Just another suggestion since Tesla is so great; trade in on a Tesla. I hear their sales are rapidly slowing (for some unknown reason), and they are giving very high trade offers right now (seriously).

I do feel slighted from this situation. Would I love it if they swapped Gen 1 hardware out to make it right, of course, but I realize that may not be possible and likely would be a financially devastating venture. What’s harder to swallow is how this devalues my Gen 1 and the fact that other than slight improvements, it hasn’t and likely won’t get any additional features like lane change or additional roadways. I think if they would at least expand the capabilities of Gen 1 and not just abandon it, it would be not only a good gesture, but also add some value. I honestly don’t care about full level 3 or hands free, but I want to be able to use D+ on more roads, change lanes and use it while towing..all things it COULD do.
