If you are dissatisfied with Rivian or your vehicle I have an idea. Trade it in and get something else. Just another suggestion since Tesla is so great; trade in on a Tesla. I hear their sales are rapidly slowing (for some unknown reason), and they are giving very high trade offers right now (seriously).
Missing the point.

I do feel slighted from this situation. Would I love it if they swapped Gen 1 hardware out to make it right, of course, but I realize that may not be possible and likely would be a financially devastating venture. What’s harder to swallow is how this devalues my Gen 1 and the fact that other than slight improvements, it hasn’t and likely won’t get any additional features like lane change or additional roadways. I think if they would at least expand the capabilities of Gen 1 and not just abandon it, it would be not only a good gesture, but also add some value. I honestly don’t care about full level 3 or hands free, but I want to be able to use D+ on more roads, change lanes and use it while towing..all things it COULD do.
I agree

I use Cruise control all the time but not the FSD installed in the Model Y of my wife. It is painful and crazy scary… having Rivian replace Gen 1 hardware at the risk of putting even more financial pressure on them for such a useless feature wouldn’t make sense IMO. I would rather see them turn profitable and ensure long term value of our trucks.
You must have an old y with hw3. We got a new 3 on a cheap lease as a commuter and fsd surprised the hell out of me how good it is. Drives me 15 miles to work each way with no interventions.

I've said it before, this is something Rivian needs to get ahead of. This will be an easy litigation, one that Rivian will lose. Well they would quickly settle out of court or try to.

Promises were made. Those promises may have enticed people to buy their product. All it takes is one and it will quickly turn into a class action lawsuit.
Not sure I agree about winning in litigation, they plastered all over the place on the website as well as the signed documents that specs could change.

I think they were aspiring to get there just did not feel confident in the end it was safe enough to release.

As long as we are holding everyone accountable, my third grade teacher told me I could grow up and be President. She owes me….

Did Rivian oversell this? Absolutely.
Did they also say repeatedly that specs can change at any time? Absolutely.
When I drove my 23 R1T off the lot I knew it didn’t have L3 capability and also that it didn’t even have the hardware to make that happen. I think you did too…

I mean, if we are playing that game.... My 2016 Model S with original Mobile-eye platform can do more than any current Rivian.....

And if you jam an orange into the steering wheel, it becomes upgraded to Level 3.
Interesting, excluding the geo fencing (which Rivian always planned) my 2016 Model S and 2022 R1S are pretty much the same. I only use both on open stretches of highway on longer trips.

Given the overwhelming complexities of starting a brand new company, I think I'll give Rivian some wiggle room and not hold them to every single "promise" they made. As time goes on, they will refine a lot of things and will learn what they can and cannot market. Having drove 31,000 miles last Apri-July around to all 48 state capitals, the highway assist worked great. It's a great truck. I'm still so excited to own a R1T that I waited nearly four years for (waiting on the max pack), and I haven't regretted a single thing. Here's looking to the future!!

There were supply chain issues due to covid. Rivian couldn't put in the cameras and tech they wanted to because it was either too expensive or unavailable due to the reduced production and factory shutdowns. Just like tons of legacy manufacturers shipped vehicles without features they were supposed to have during that same time period.

I don't know what recognizing it now is going to do, there's nothing that can be done about it.
It was the flawed architectural approach of trying to do sensor fusion with the output of a mobileye system that screwed gen1 ADAS evolution. Supply chain issues don’t lead to a flawed architecture (and please don’t try to say they do), if they do then they lied to investors and the public - which I don’t think they did: they just bit off more than they could chew, and were naive about what they could achieve with the gen1 approach.

Maybe I am in the minority but I don't want this feature. If you don't want to pay attention while driving take an uber.
You’re missing the point. I use hands-free driving with my Model X all the time. I don’t use it so I can daydream, I see it more as an extra set of eyes on the road. Tesla’s FSD isn’t perfect but IMHO it’s usable and certainly reacts to dangerous conditions much faster than I can.

I’d be happy if the existing system wasn’t a steaming pile of shit. I’ve driven with Tesla AP which is fantastic. I’d just like to have that again.

Maybe in '23, but when I met RJ in '20, he told me to my face that it was L3 capable. A comment he reiterated to my face in '21, and a statement that was reiterated to me by my Guide, the test drive associate, and the delivery person in '22...

So the only people who knew it wasn't L3 capable were the ones lying to our faces.

Not missing the point at all. I see plenty of people in Tesla's driving with FSD on reading a book, the paper, their phone not looking up at all. Usually I avoid them because they are a danger to be on the road with. I use Highway assist and dynamic cruise for years on Audi,BMW, infiniti and my Rivian. Just think 'eyes off' is not a good idea, that is an opinion.

The same statement was made to me when I drove it for the first time, at delivery, in March 2022.

So I think we can pinpoint the "oh shit, we can't do this..." to end of 2022, early 2023.
