I've been paying close attention to performance the last few days, and I think I've had a few epiphanies as to why performance is (at times) so poor on the infotainment computer. But first a bit of context:

Many have noticed that the map app is generally very poor performing. Lots of lag when pinching, dragging, etc if anything else is happening at the same time. Especially if you're in the satellite view. @cpucrazy has noted that if he has a route in the nav, his performance suffers greatly. I've noticed that if I have the map up in the diver's display things also tend to slow down generally.

So here's where things get weird with the blind spot camera. I've noticed that things really start to suffer when the turn signal camera is up. If you try to interact with the center screen frames start dropping like crazy, the 3d visualizer starts dropping frames, and things just move very slowly in general. But I've had an insight into why this might be the case.

Yesterday on the way home from work I had the music widget in the driver's display up. When I was merging on to the freeway there was some weird glitch where the widget on the left was a map on the left half, and the camera view on the right half of the widget box. Then this morning I saw another glitch. This time, the camera itself just disappeared and the map widget was there instead (highlighted in red when there was a person in my blind spot). While all of this was happening the 3d visualizer was dropping frames like crazy. 10-15FPS if I had to guess. As soon as I let go of the turn signal, it went back to the music widget and it was performing normally. But here's where it gets weird. later, when I was getting off of the freeway, using the right turn signal there was no performance hit at all. The camera view popped right up, and the 3d visuals were perfect with no frames dropped.

Remember how I mentioned performance suffers when the map widget is up? Well it seems that for some strange reason, the blind spot camera always launches the map widget behind it. No wonder performance starts to suffer when you do that!

Very strange that it would do that. Good news though - it seems that would be a relatively easy performance uplift to fix.

(side note - all of these observations are on a Gen 2 vehicle. The infotainment computer is mostly the same between generations, but there may be slight behavior differences between the 2)

Is this only happening on Gen 2? It’s my understanding the infotainment system is largely the same with Gen 1 but I haven’t noticed any of these issues on my Quad.

I kind of wonder if the issue is worse with gen 2 because the same (or at least similar) chip is getting pushed harder with the higher res cameras, etc.

That said - @cpucrazy has a gen 1, and he said he's had pretty laggy map performance

Correct, I have a Gen1 R1T and the entire infotainment system has been super laggy. Every time I touch the screen for any purpose, the whole system and music will almost always stutter and then come back, and its not like it happens once or twice while an app is opening or starting up, its consistent. Sometimes the touch on the screen will stutter the music and not register that I touched the screen. It makes dragging around the map while navigating basically useless and impossible, and annoying.

The problem is made especially worse when I am navigating, or have recently switched profiles.

Something of note, this problem was 'fixed' with the last update, and I didn't notice any issues again until a couple of days ago, and only after I had used casting to watch a TV episode while charging. And come to think of it, I dont think I ever had this problem before the Google Cast update.... But I could be wrong.

i had to honk my horn the other day and probably a minute later i hear the chime of the incident camera kicking in. i tested it again today and it’s super delayed. haven’t tried a reset yet.

That's an interesting observation - I wonder if Google Cast is running in the background... Definitely odd behavior.

I might be remembering wrong, but doesn't it chime just after the horn, but also after about a minute when the recording ends automatically?

Maybe this is related to Connect+? Now that I think about it, the infotainment was definitely slower when I still had the Connect+ trial (had to press buttons multiple times, slow screen load times, music would skip when switching pages, etc.) Since the free trial expired it’s much more responsive. The 2023 R1T Quad I have as a loaner is also very responsive sans Connect+

Wait your loaner doesn't have connect+?? Interesting.. I have had 2 loaners in the last few months and both of them did have it

now i’m not by the truck to go and check, but i thought it made a sound at both ends. regardless it wasn’t done recording when the noise happened because the progress bar had just started.

I just checked and I think it does. There’s no obvious place on the UI that indicates a Connect+ subscription, but YouTube and the Wi-Fi hotspot work so it must have Connect+

Hot spot and the ability to use satellite view in maps are two easy ways to tell

rivian also probably lags because the entire system is poorly designed.

They are using unreal engine for rendering all the 3d. Significantly more performant to build your own operating system and rendering engine

If you've ever used a tesla with the new rear screen you can literally run demanding games on the rear screen while navigation and full self driving is running. No issues.
