This is sort of an existential question. I work in the construction industry and my vehicles end up being utilitarian. I didn't think of it until today when someone asked if they could throw something in my truck. I guess with the suspension and the AT tires, it looks more like a truck than most SUV's...

To me more truck than car. I think a cross over like the Model X is more car than truck.

I see the R1S as an SUV, the R1T as a pickup and a very large commercial lorry as a truck.

Yeah, the R1S replaced my Model X. Even though the seats were often down and loaded with stuff, I never thought of it as a truck.

R1S = Body on frame construction = Truck (same as Tahoe, Wrangler, etc)
Most SUVS = Unibody = Crossover (Model Y/X, Blazer, etc.)
Unibody with glued on panels masquerading as an exoskeleton = Cybertruck
;)

My insurance company calls my Ford Mach-E "2021 Ford Truck".

If my Mach-E can be a truck, an R1S is definitely a truck.

I'd call it an offroad capable minivan. No offense to minivans or R1S owners. Basically, all SUVs are the current equivalent of minivans. Most soccer moms (and dads) have moved from minivans to SUVs.

The EPA says that minivans are trucks. So there's that...;-)

Let's be honest, 90% of pickup owners use it as an offroad capable minivan

I made a friend super crazy by continually calling his truck a car. All trucks are cars too.

If it is a body-on-frame then yes, it is a truck. Essentially if the Truck and SUV have the same frame, then the SUV is a truck. I.e. Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, AND R1S.

My R1S is so much bigger and heavier than the 3 that I traded in for it, and than most vehicles I've owned, that it feels like it needs a different word than "car"; calling it "car" feels fake, not acknowledging the bulky, weighty reality. I'd say lumbering, but it's peppier than my 3. Preferably a simple monosyllabic word; SUV is far too polysyllabic and awkward for everyday use, and a bit of a euphemistic marketing invention anyway. No offense to truck drivers, many of whom drive much bigger stuff, but I've been calling it "truck". Perhaps if I were Australian, I'd call it a "ute" (but that would get confusing around here with the Ute, and the various geographical features named after them). Maybe we need to co-opt the term "ute" anyway. Even if, as some pointed out, it's for many a "baby buggy" or "soccer shuttle". "Smute", for "Soccer Mom Ute"? 3 rows of seats, after all, plus room for ice and juices in the frunk, and for gear in the subtrunk. Can even hitch mount a mountain bike for something to do during the game. Almost like they built it for all that.

Just some thoughts.
