No rust concerns at all. Just don't particularly care for a premium priced vehicle to have stamped steel control arms and links....

Premium? R2 starts at $45k. Average price for a new car in 2024 was $47k (1.4% higher than 2023). The Honda Passport starts at $46.2k. The Passport is not a premium product.

There goes RJ talking us out of buying a Gen 2 R1 and waiting for the R2. I am getting more excited about the R2 every month that passes!

(You know, RJ, every coming soon product creates and Osborne effect but you do not have to amplify it every week on social media!)

Suspension is tricky business, especially with the dampers on the R1 platform - 3 electronic valves per shock, air spring, hydraulic roll control, an absolute tuning nightmare with all those knobs to turn.

In comparison the R2 will be riding on conventional coil springs, appear to be single valve dampers, and roll bars which should be super easy for the team to execute on. My wife doesn't want the large R1S and is patiently awaiting the R2.

Everyone, get ready for rusty-linkage-gate. Stock up on pop corn. /s
Other car companies have 9AM to 5PM guys who engineer to a dollar amount. Not at Rivian. RJ is a Porschephile and the vehicle dynamics engineers are true gear heads (like Pikes Peak competitor Gardner Nichols). These aren't the sort who accept status quo for SUV handling and say, we'll do exactly the same because that's just the way things are.
I like my G1 R1S ride. However, this is my first SUV after a lifetime of stiff sports cars. I believe ride quality is a bit subjective. It depends on what you're used to driving, what your other cars are and your overall health.

Love your point on RJ's love of Porsches. I would have loved my R1 to have a regular suspension like this R2. I'm hoping the R2 is the Porsche Cayman of Rivian. My neighbours 718 was better handling than my 911 and I hope the R2 is better than the R1 and the R3X is better than the R2. Cheers.

Are these ride height sensors? Could the R2 have an (likely optional) adjustable suspension?

Sensor, yes. Air suspension, no. Most likely these sensors are being used to level the headlights (my 2004 bmw 330 did this) or potentially contribute to dynamic adjustment of the dampers.

Every modern cayenne and macan, including the e-macan utilizes some of these. No doubt BMW and Mercedes do as well

Key takeaway from the post for me was "our optimized cost structure." We'll see how much that impacts how well it works in the end. You can talk a lot now but how will it perform when the rubber meets the road.

It won't be adjustable height like the R1 but likely adaptive to give you the ability to switch between soft/sport mode.

Seriously, the R2 is not a premium priced vehicle. People need to have the right expectations.

Please no air suspension, or at least make that an option and start with decent springs/shocks.

If price point/profitiabilty is a goal, I struggle to see where and how air suspension fits in. Leave that for the R1.
