Hello everyone. I want to start by saying I love Rivians and will be considering one in the future!! I have a gripe with the cruise control lane centering autopilot. I would love to go on a road trip but what if you go on a road that is not already premapped and you can’t use the lane centering at all?? I think that stinks. For example, an f150 has blue cruise which you can turn on/off but still use the lane centering feature anytime without blue cruise enabled. You can use Rivian’s lane keep assist which is decent right?? But Rivian should do the same?? Thoughts

Gen1 or 2?

I find the Gen2 drive assist plus to be very good. However, it doesn’t function on unmapped roads and reverts back to hands on the wheel assisted cruise.

There is no comparison between the Rivian system and those provided by Ford and GM. I have the Gen 1, so cannot really speak to Gen 2. I have a Mach E with BC and a Hummer with SC, they are far better, with the GM system being the best. Rivian also disables adaptive cruise and lane centering when trailering. The Hummer tows hands free, even on two lane undivided highways.

On Gen 2 vehicles they've already announced plans to go "mapless". But you're right. Until that happens it's pretty frustrating to use

Rivian has LKA, but it sucks. Most just turn it off and leave it off. It WILL NOT keep you centered and is not designed to be used like an ADAS lane centering system.

Currently F150 Powerboost, Looking at Rivian R1Ts
Not great for the "software" company being currently bested by legacy automakers whose achilles heel is supposed to be software. Hopefully, Rivian make up the slack shortly.

Given Rivian was designed from the start to incorporate ADAS, and had access for o see how others implemented it, I am really underwhelmed by the mapped roads implementation. My 21 Audi eTron Prestige beats it hands down, working on virtually all roads. But that car is likely higher end than my Rivian. However, I recently took a trip and rented a Toyota 4Runner that did not even have power seats. Yet, it had good lane centering on every road I tried it on. It really does seem Rivian was either blowing smoke in its early days or its engineers totally lacking in state of the art knowledge.

Heck, other than capacitive vs torque monitoring, my Mach-E *WITHOUT* BC is generally better than Rivian's Gen 1 Driver+ Highway Assist. It automatically adjusts for the speed limit, it auto-reengages after disengagement, it works on non-mapped roads, it has speed limit offset.

As I learned today, even the Gen2 hands-free Highway Assist doesn't keep you centered in the lane. I watched it cross the line on NB 16 after the Narrows where it climbs. I pulled it back into the lane and it disengaged HA. So I won't be trusting that feature in the loaner.

A simple 2023 corolla comes with better cruise control than rivian

my gen1 is just coming to me on a container ship (I live in europe)
so rivian, which has been saying for years that it is an innovative company with good software, has a worse lane keeping system than a 2017 chevrolet volt?
