Has anyone that messed with the interface knows if Folding mirrors can be set to manual so you only fold them when you need to? I don’t need to wear it out in my driveway.

unless you keep pushing the button to fold unfold over and over, it won’t wear them out in your driveway ?

every other vehicle I’ve dealt with that has auto-folding mirrors can turn them off, so the Rivian should too

You've never been in a Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 it seems. Wonderful EV to drive, but there is no way to disable the folding mirrors.

I don't have experience with auto folding mirrors but I'm imagining ice crusted snow we get in the Northeast will wear them out. Rivian these need to be configurable.

By manual, I mean if you could tell it to fold (once) instead of turning on the auto when you need it. So you don’t have to turn it off again. You know how much work that is? Especially if they hide it deep in the menu tree ;)

You can tell I don’t get off the couch that often.

Pg 37 or so in the owner’s manual mentions it

I feel like every now and then it's worth reminding folks that if you don't trust electric motors, this might not be the car for you ?

They just need to have a heating element to melt the layer of ice. Otherwise I'll be driving home without side mirrors quite often next winter

touché

All electric motors are not created equal. My sump pump and washer motors were bomb proof. They just wouldn’t die no matter what I did to them. My car window, the actuator for passenger heat/cold air,, ….. you name it, all made life uncomfortable for me at some point. I doubt an EV car company do cost cutting on the motors that move the car (it’s main function) but getting cheap on non critical stuff is mighty common. I have had too many of those issues to root for motorizing everything. Then again, I keep my cars longer than average person. Others may not have as much problem with it.

And it is not as much about motors as it is about simple vs complex. EVs claim to be less complex in parts than ICE. Adding to automation, adds to complexity. Adding complexity for safety, I may be able to get behind but for convenience is a case by case thing for me.

I have to admit, part of it is that doing unnecessary things bug me. Mirror should fold only when it makes sense. If it was the all or nothing choice, I would go for nothing (non motorized but foldable). In general motorizing something so you don’t have to move your arm , then spending time and money to go to gym so you can burn calories does not make a whole lot of sense to me. But in competitive industries things don’t always have to make sense. If a company adds an auto butt scratcher to heating and cooling feature on their car seats, sooner or later you will end up paying for one in your car even if your butt is perfectly fine.

If it isn't there at launch, its something they most definitely could add with an OTA update.

Challenge accepted.

Give me a pair of side-cutters and five minutes while you go get a cup of coffee... :p

Being a Volvo, the folding mirrors will disable themselves real soon just like the rest of the car.
