I've felt since the beginning the the nav portion of the system was always a bit of a weak point. Directions weren't quite right. Traffic data was unreliable at times. The inability to click on POIs was a letdown.

We'll know for sure when the rubber hits the road, but this move to Google Maps is pretty big deal and likely a really good move by Rivian.

Of course not, Gen 1 is essential abandonware at this time.
This is ridiculous. In this announcement gen 1s are getting significant features including the new Google Maps stack and the accessory mode improvement (the latter has been my #1 wishlist feature for almost two years). We recently got the energy app, the new media apps (including chromecast etc.). Not that long ago we got the whole UI refresh.

The fact that we're not getting identical suspension tuning likely reflects a more mature platform that is already optimized to the extent the hardware supports, whereas they're still dialing in the potential of the Gen 2s. Of course the vehicles will diverge as Gen2 has newer and more capable hardware.

But it's insane to imply Gen 1 is "abandonware" at this stage - there's no other vehicle on the market with even close to the same level of ongoing feature development as even a Gen1 Rivian outside of Tesla, and even there I'd call it a tie (but I view most Autopilot updates as regressions, so...)

Kinda crazy how quickly rivian stopped giving updates to their most loyal customers.
You must have missed the link above to the Gen1 release notes where the most notable parts of this release come to Gen1?

They mean the Rivian phone app
Well, that's be interesting. I'm more interested in knowing what is gated to Connect+ in the vehicle app (Mapbox satellite view currently), but if I'm on my phone, I could just load up Google Maps natively, so I'm not sure what the Connect+ benefit is there.

This is great! I wonder how much of it we can use without Connect plus or if this is finally the thing that makes me start paying?

Overall I expect this to be an improvement, but I kind of expect it to lose track of my house (Google maps tends to think it is either across the street in an empty lot, or where my next-next door neighbor is). For everyone not headed to my house though I expect this to be an improvement.

I'm supposed to pick up a new work phone today and I hope it isn't another monster sized Iphone Pro Super Max 14 or whatever they call it, like my last one. I've had so many work phones and nothing compares to the Galaxy Note 10 Ultra I had a few years ago that they snagged from me and replaced with that apple.
Apple does make smaller phones than the Max you know, but yes, Samsung makes incredible phones too! It's like Nikon or Canon for pro cameras....both are amazing, you simply pick what you like.

Yippee

will speed limits be up to date?

Will satellite view be higher resolution?

I hope they can download more map data to car so that nav can be used without cell signal.

Wow google maps is significant.....

Updates to a UI are not significant. Glad you got an accessory mode, I am actually surprised Rivian didn't claim Gen 1 hardware couldn't support it. That seems to be par for the course.

The fact that we're not getting identical suspension tuning likely reflects a more mature platform that is already optimized to the extent the hardware supports, whereas they're still dialing in the potential of the Gen 2s. Of course the vehicles will diverge as Gen2 has newer and more capable hardware.
So no improvements to Gen 1 are possible? Just like "tank turn", "launch mode", ADAS and many others....

Tesla does a much better job. Rivian does not compare with Tesla at this stage. I was rooting for them, but they seem to lack any integrity at this point.

Also I said "essentially abandonware" not just abandonware. Quit getting your knickers in a bind and actually read what people type.

You must have missed the link above to the Gen1 release notes where the most notable parts of this release come to Gen1?
A new UI... Wow... "most notable." You can get mad all you want, facts remain that the Gen 1 are an after thought and are essentially abandonware.

Here's my video review on 2025.22

First time I've clicked on an embedded YT link and got some kind of "sign in to prove you're not a bot" message. The video just doesn't work for me.

Looking forward to this one. The Google maps integration in our Volvo is much better than Rivian Nav. Now if they would only do something about Alexa… Nice to see we will get arrival SOC in percentage too.
