I wonder what ride height the R1S is in here. Based on some back of the envelop math on vehicle height etc I figured the R2 would have slightly more ground clearance than the R1 in "Low," with a similar door sill to roof measurement.

The length difference is really encouraging to see side by side.
I thought the R2 was not going to have adjustable air suspension. I assumed it would be basic springs and shocks. Is that wrong?

Tesla owner here (M3 SR LFP and MY LR AWD). I really like the Rivian M2. Perfect size for my wife and me. The problem is, if there is no repair/service facility within +150 miles of where I live (south of Tucson, Rivian service is in Phoenix) I can't consider any make vehicle for our use.
:(
Time to move then.

No air suspension, but some type of adjustable shock probably on the tri-motor version.

Images shared by Rivian show adjustable dampers—looking identical to Monroe's electronically adjustable RideSense shocks. Monroe is a division of Tenneco, which is supplier of record for the R1's hydraulic dynamic body control dampers. So while height is not adjustable, ride quality is—compression and rebound damping. Springs are what suspend the chassis & body. Dampers control speed and duration of spring oscillation.

R2 needs to be taller. Size is good, needs a 2" lift.
Let's be honest...does it really?

The size of the R2 makes it prime for competition among small-mid sized SUVs like the CRV, Rav4, Ford Escape, and maybe even some Subarus.

There a miniscule number of owners who will be taking this anywhere near an off road, or even some grass/gravel. As a business, Rivian is likely going to prioritize features that gets them the most value.

Would I love a lifted R2 so I can throw on some chunky boi off road tires? Of course but the enthusiast group represents a very small portion of the market.

Just my opinion of course.

Notice our Texan friend didn't say "ground clearance needs to be better", he said "needs to be taller" ... so I am guessing function (and safety) are not the criteria here....

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

I totally understand. Not having a service center nearby is a legitimate concern. We have a Tesla Service Center about 30 minutes east and I still had to wait 17 days to get in. We also have a Rivian Service Center about 30 minutes southeast. I’ve heard wait times for service can be brutal. I think it’s just the nature of a startup. I’m sure things will improve by the time the R3 releases in 2028. 🤞

Judging from the comments it seems some have not seen the R1 vs R2 comparison on Rivian's website, reproduced below?

Not surprising that people don't read or seek & process info. R1 and R2 size differences is literally depicted in OP's post.

To me, it would look more proportional to have a an additional 2 inches. The 9.8 inch clearance is fine but a little more on water fording depth would be helpful and matters to me. At 69 inches, it is an inch shorter than the Bronco Sport. I'm sure some combination of after market stuff will allow me to tweak the look and function.

I'm counting on folks like you to take the Dual or Tri-Motor and create a bit more off-road awesome without compromising the range too much.

That R1S looks good with that kit. As a guy who likes a more street look, I'm still impressed by that.

From what I remember floating around, the R2 is figured to have 9.8" clearance, and the R1S in its lowest setting is 8 inches.
