Ok all.... what is the trick. I took a road trip from KS to AR to drop my husband off for the AR High Country. I decided I was going to almost exclusively charge at the Tesla location and paid the membership. Of course, at the first stop, Rivian takes over the payment even though I was initiating the charge via the Tesla app. To fix the problem going forward, I just disabled my card in the Rivian app, so there was no payment method for it to hit, and the Tesla app finished the handshake, and everything worked fine after that.

But here is my big problem!!! As we were heading down, I was unable to get the adapter off the tesla plug. My husband was able to get it off. So my big problem happened on my way home. I only needed to charge once in Joplin, great station. I plug in, get as much charge as I needed. I decided to leave the adapter plugged into the truck for extra leverage and just tried to remove the telse plug from the adapter. Of course, this didn't work. So I unplug and sit on the curb and hold the adapter with my feet and try to push and pull the tesla plug out. I sat there and worked at for like 5min. Thank goodness this was a busy station and some guy was walking back to his Tesla and was able to help get the adapter off.

I google this and found info that said hold down the tesla button and push the plug into the adapter and then pull out and it should release. I was pushing and pulling with all my might.

So am I just not strong enough to get this adapter off the Tesla plug, or do I need to stop using Tesla chargers unless my husband is with me? What is the deal? Any suggestions? Special tool for more leverage?

Mellowyellow is correct. You do need to push the button as far as possible. It is also tight when you first use it. Have your husband install and remove it few times.

It can be VERY tight. And mine got worse after a few uses to the point I could not get it off. I just abandoned it still connected to the Tesla cable. I'm now using the Rivian supplied one and I find that one a better overall design.

I had this same problem on the way home from picking up my R1T. I needed to do one fast charge, and had signed up for a Tesla subscription to have access to the supercharging network.

The order of operation I use is this:

1. Open the charge port door and pull down the CCS charging cover.
2. Put the A2Z adapter into the charge port on the Rivian..
3. Open the Tesla app and go through the location and charge pedestal designation. Once the Tesla app has indicated to do so, remove the charging cable from the supercharger holster.
4. Put the Tesla cable into the A2Z adapter (that is already plugged into the Rivian).
5. At that point, charging should start.

Once I've reached the desired state of charge, here's what I do:

6. Stop the charging through the phone app or on the Rivian's main screen.
7. Once charging has stopped, click the top button and pull the Tesla cable out of the adapter. If it doesn't come out right away, count to 5 and try again.
8. Holster the Tesla cable in the supercharger.
9. Click the to button again and pull the adapter out of the Rivian's charging port.
10. Click the CCS cover shut, and close the charge port door.

This is the order of operation that I've found works best for me. YMMV, of course.

Never had problems. I always put the adapter into port first. One swift positive motion. Then, confirm it is all the way seated and locked. Next, initiate session in Tesla app. I do not insert plug into adapter until app instructs me to. This ensures back-end handshake is complete. I insert plug with same gumption to make sure it seats fully. Then, wait for the whirly noises and port lighting to turn green.

If you don’t make positive connection with adapter or plug, second guess and wiggle, that could register as separate connection/attempt and default to plug-and-charge.

If your adapter is new, tolerances could be tight and require force. Don’t be shy. It will get better once broken-in with repeated use.

I put a drop of oil (lucas oil with the pin for easy 1 drop application) on the pivot points and/ or sliders on all my adapters and plugs whenever they are finicky. Same for A2Z and Lectron adapters before the Rivian (Tesla) one was released. Also my charge point home charger at least once a year. It's rained on and out side almost 1/2 the year charging one of our cars.

Not saying that was your issue but mine were very rough and hard to manipulate when I got them.

Make sure you push the button all the way down. It is dual lock function.
This. With no adapters plugged in, press the release button and watch the Tesla side of the adapter. You can see that the retaining pin doesn't move until you press "through" the CCS side's release state.
