Article: Rivian recalls nearly 20,000 US vehicles over improperly reassembled toe link

Rivian R1T R1S Recall: Rear Toe‑Link Bolts Replacement (affects 19,641 R1 vehicles) 1767885824570-b5

Jan 8 (Reuters) - Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O) is recalling 19,641 previously serviced R1S and R1T electric vehicles in the U.S., citing incorrectly assembled rear toe link, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday.

The automaker will replace the rear toe‑link bolts free of charge, NHTSA said.

Rivian was aware of only one single vehicle crash with minor injuries related to the toe link issue, the agency added.

In 2025, Rivian produced 42,284 vehicles and delivered 42,247 vehicles.

NHTSA disclosed last month that Rivian was recalling 34,824 electric delivery vans after finding that repeated misuse could damage the driver’s seat‑belt pretensioner cable, though the company said it was not aware of any related incidents or injuries.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like it’s related to vehicles that went in for service, as opposed to a mistake at the factory.

Some additional details:
Rivian Automotive, LLC has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2022-2025 Rivian R1 vehicles.

What Is the problem?

Rivian has determined that on certain R1 vehicles, toe link joints reassembled during vehicle service with a service procedure before March 10, 2025, may result in a joint that is not reassembled to design intent and could experience unintended forces.

In certain cases, if a toe link was serviced using the earlier service procedure, vehicle motion may eventually cause toe link joint separation. Separation of the toe link while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash without prior warning. Rivian is aware of one single-vehicle accident with alleged minor injuries related to this issue.

What will Rivian do?

Rivian will replace any potentially affected rear toe link bolts on the potentially affected vehicles using its updated service procedure free of charge.

Yeah that definitely seems to be the message if you read between the lines, only related to reassembly from service.

The recall population includes certain Model Year 2022 to 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles that may have received service resulting in a joint that is not reassembled to design intent during a repair requiring separation and reassembly of a rear suspension toe link joint.

It's a surprisingly high number of vehicles, but I suppose they are also including any service where there's even a chance that they touched that bolt. Alignments probably being the biggest one I would think.

I'm wondering if vehicles that had any rear half-shaft related service done are the affected vehicles. 🤔 Drive unit replacement, half shaft noise, etc.

I missed it. Did it say how the affected owners would be contacted? I did have an alignment done at a SC last year. That would be the only time I knew of for them getting close to that bolt on mine.

Probably. I doubt Rivian has service records that would be thorough enough to accurately identify bolts that were touched and procedures that were followed.

Damn. If they're including any vehicle that even went in for an alignment, that would account for the high number.

I wonder what about people who had alignments done in collision centers or aftermarket shops?

I'm certainly going to be on the list (along with 19,640 other folk), Alignment, Rear disconnect and other work means this has almost certainly been touched - I wonder if this may be related to the creaking our truck does from the backend when turning tight corners (especially when reversing out of parking spaces).

I had a rear-end "kathunk" on my gen2 R1S earlier after my powerslide found traction :(. Totaled, probably.

Lemon it and get a Cybertruck next then?

(I'm hoping that a spot of grease fixes my issue, which I'll ask about when it goes in for this - I've not been to a service center this year and want to keep it that way long as possible! :D )
