Can someone recommend a NACS to J1772 adapter.

I tried to charge at a Tesla Destination Charger yesterday but charging wouldn’t start. I finally noticed an error message on the Rivian screen telling me I needed a NACS to J1772 adapter.

it took me a while to realize an adapter was needed because the the Tesla NACS tip plugs right into the Rivian charging port.

I have a TeslaTap mini 80 amp and it's always worked well at Tesla Destination chargers. I have a small lock that I keep with it because without it anyone can stop your charge session - to either plug in themselves or to steal your adapter.

There are LOTS of cheap adapters out there. I got mine used for $200 and new they're now $340. Don't skimp and get a cheap one because you're going to be plugging in and walking away. You don't want it melting down while you're sleeping in a hotel or enjoying dinner.

They weren't selling them when I bought mine, but now I'd go with A2Z:
A2Z NACS to J1772 Charger

Drive well!

I have been using the Lectron adapter for about a year and a half now and it has been reliable.

If I needed a new NACS-to-J1772 adapter, @norivian, I would spend the extra money for TeslaTap (https://www.umc-j1772.com/). All TeslaTap adapters are designed in USA, and many are still made in USA. Engineering and customer service has been top notch.

A2Z has almost as good a reputation as TeslaTap, at a lower price point (designed in Canada, made in China). Lectron (also made in China) had some engineering problems for a while, but seems to have overcome them.

I wouldn't advise considering any brand other than those three.

I'm curious how you plugged a NACS plug into a pre-2026 Rivian. Given the structures of the two connection types, I don't understand how that's possible. @norivian, do you have photos of the Tesla charging plug and of your Rivian's charge port?

Your vehicle's message that this was an adapter problem isn't necessarily the last word.

EDIT: Updating what @KBabione said about locking your adapter to the vehicle with a third-party padlock, I think this is now outdated information.

My understanding is that current Rivian software now locks the charging plug to the charging socket whenever the R1S or R1T is locked.

I got padlocks when I first bought the adapters, but now I don't bother to use them because the vehicle handles the locking for me..

Best wishes!

Hmmm...Interesting. I last used my TeslaTap Mini last fall at a hotel that surprisingly had Tesla Destination Charger (the desk clerk explained that the Tesla sitting in the charging space not charging was the owner's - I had to park in a no-parking area to charge). I'll keep it in mind and will try unplugging with the vehicle locked the next time I have to use it. It would be nice not to have to fuss with the little padlock. It's one of the things I like about the A2Z...It has an integrated key lock.

I'm a little confused. Are you saying you plugged the NACS plug straight into the CCS port on your 2023 Rivian?

No, it doesn't. What did you actually use? An NACS to CCS adapter? (Which if so, you found out, it doesn't work as it's DC only.)

As to an adapter, get whatever is cheap, they are all the same and there's nothing special in them. I got this, works fine: https://amazon.com/dp/B0CJ2KX644

Note that Tesla destination chargers can be set to be Tesla-only, so they still might not work. Verify in PlugShare.

Agree with this. No need to buy an expensive adapter. Keep in mind that Tesla's own J1772 to NACS adapter is just $50. I've been using an adapter from that EVDance company for about a year and a half with no issues on the Rivian or a Mach-E. Destination charging at family members' homes is via a Tesla UMC, so my adapter has been used for hundreds of kwh. Here's the one have:

https://www.amazon.com/EVDANCE-Tesla-J1772-Charging-Adapter/dp/B0CJXDGW1J

Also note that sometimes a Tesla destination charger may not work on first plug, regardless of adapter and whether it's set to be available to all EVs. This fall, my own home UWCs with their built in adapters started throwing errors when I first plugged in the truck until I switched it to compatibility mode. I think this is the result of a Rivian update as the Mach-E still charged fine on first plug.

Honestly, I am confused myself. The fact that the Destination Charger plugged, charging should have worked. I was just going by the error msg I saw on Rivian’s screen. It’s a 2025 R1S. The Tesla say charger says it’s open to all EVs (i.e., “Available to the Public”. Tesla is actually going through the requesting credit card authorization process successfully but charging just won’t start. R1S errors out.

It’s a 2025 R1S.
Please update your profile to show this. You will see there are two posts with the context of a 2023 which is what's in your profile.

In this case, the adapter above doesn't apply, and the problem makes no sense.

The Tesla say charger says it’s open to all EVs (i.e., “Available to the Public”.

Your MY25 R1 has a combo J1772/CCS1 charging port.

Tesla Destination chargers are Level 2 (AC), most have NACS AC plug and some have J1772 plug. For ones with NACS AC plug, you need a NACS AC to J1772 adapter, like A2Z Stellar.

Tesla Superchargers are Level 3 (DC). You need a NACS DC to CCS1 adapter, like A2Z Typhoon Pro.

To have most charging flexibility, you need to acquire both adapters.

NACS AC pins don't line up with J1772 socket. Lucky they don't.

I used the lowest cost adapter amazon had for about two years. No issues. $25
Make sure it is rated for the full power to be used. Some like mine were just 40 amps but you may need the 60 or 80 amp.
