I know it's slightly inefficient, but I prefer a full time system to a system that engaged and disengages clutches all the time.
I'm the opposite. The F-150 Lightning had this type of configuration and I was constantly wishing it was using Rivian's clutch system to allow a full disconnect. The same for my EV9.

The option to do either would be great, but for me I prefer the full disconnect. That said, I prefer it because I do quite a bit of road tripping. I could see how if the majority of your driving is "local" and a mix of highway/city, then an Auto/Dual Mode would make much more sense. Different strokes for different folks..

The grass is always greener... I wish my dual motor could just have the motors permanently engaged 99% of the time so I can have the responsiveness of sport mode in standard ride height. This would be the default mode, and it wouldn't reset to some lower mode after a sleep. I only need the efficiency of AP mode while on road trips.

This is one of the biggest unsung advantages of the quad motors.

I was told to engage and disengage AP/conserve when static. Other wise you risk damaging the system.

Equally, conserve mode gets me about 20miles of range versus the tire wear and driving dynamics of front wheel only. Not worth it in my book. Just keep it in 4WD all the time.

Dual Motor owner here; and I agree. I prefer the "full locked" AWD setup for daily driving. Road trips I'll take the "conserve" approach.

I spend a lot of my time daily driving with the stability control set to reduced to force the rear motors engaged. Heavy expressway traffic in general is the largest noticeable time when I want that AWD all the time feeling.

I doubt you would damage the system and quite a few people (including myself) were told to engage conserve while at constant velocity with little to no load.

Thanks all for the input...I'm never switching from AP to Conserve (or back) while accelerating or decelerating. I basically get up to speed and make the switch and then switch back at the same speed about .5 mile before my exit. I do the same when approaching/leaving a construction zone. I've never had a problem, but I don't think I'd want to be at a complete stop to switch modes. I'll ask when I'm at the SC the next time.

@SDH - Yeah...I get 20-25 more miles out of my large battery when I'm in Conserve most of the trip. I really only do it when I know I'm going to have to stop at a fast charger to get to my destination - It becomes my "buffer" in case the charging location is full and I need to go someplace else.

This is the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned. The only real time I use Conserve on the Gen1 QM is when you're already at highway speed for a long stretch, and even then I don't typically use it over AP.

Just start in conserve mode already. Does the vehicle really need to get up to speed in five seconds?
I agree, the world is not a racetrack...why does anyone need to launch with all four motors. Use Conserve and save on charging. Use quad mode for occasional fun stuff.

I like how it is done on G1. Having the option to increase efficiency by 10% or so on a road trip is great. IMO, G2 system was designed to save costs by reducing the battery pack size to get same EPA estimate. That's fair, as Rivian was losing money on each G1 sold and the prices would have been higher than they are.

There are some clear upgrades in G2 in cameras etc, so G2 owners don't have to feel bad.

I may want/need to suddenly use all the truck's power, but I never want to suddenly reduce my energy consumption by 6%.

The only R1S available when we purchased (August 2023) was the quad - it wasn't really a choice. If we were to buy again now, I'd probably get a DM Max for the range. It still has enough zip (although noticeably less than our quad) and the additional 130 miles range would be really useful. What I really liked about AP mode in the PDM loaner was that it just automatically engaged the rear motor if you stepped on the accelerator. Conserve mode in my quad doesn't do that. As someone above said, I don't need the power most of the time, but when I want it, I want it immediately without having to switch screens (I'm usually on the map screen) and switch modes.

This.

My R1T Gen 1 Quad in Conserve mode is the fastest accelerating vehicle I've ever owned.

Other than the same vehicle in any mode other than Conserve.

EV insta-speed is so pervasive and addictive, people forget how *SLOW* cars used to be.

OK that is going a bit too far. I am all for spirited driving unless I need the range.
