They are offering a series of ranges. Essentially 300 and 400 miles vs 310, 320 and 400 miles in the Volvo. Not sure what you are trying about when both vehicles by 2027 will offer very similar ranges. My point was the price, if you are paying $60k then one vehicle having 80 miles more range has an advantage with most consumers all things being equal (of course they are not since looks, brand perception etc are subjective).
Ah..ok, the price, as 80 miles more is not meaningful to my use case. Price is not much of a concern in this general $50k-$70k territory to get the right vehicle for our needs. I'm glad to be comfortably under six figures.

Out of interest how many runaway thermal events happen in BEVs nowadays?
Few, but they are devastating and still essentially unmanageable, as a couple of ship captains found out, as the government of Korea found out before banning EV underground parking in some areas, as State Farm insurance decided when banning EV charging in their corporate parking structures, etc. Overall risk = frequency x outcome. Low frequency and horrific outcome is not desireable for me for a highly optional/elective purchase to replace a 2024 BMW with only 8,000 miles. My dislike of going to gas stations and being subjected to oil industry whimsical pricing only deserves so much catering if I'm not comfortable with the incremental risk.

I am glad it works for you. However for most consumers 80 miles will at the very least by physiologically important and a positive for BMW since people (whether rationally or not) want more power, more range etc when paying the same unless there is another differentiator. The Volvo is the better looking vehicle. We will see how they drive.

Good to have choice and I have to disagree, a few thousand dollars difference in this range (remember that the average price for a new car is now $50k) does matter to people even if it does not matter to you.

Yes 370 (worried about R2 competitiveness on this!)
Well, we'll see what the charge curve is like on all of these new EV's soon when real world reviews come. But yes, Rivian will most likely be slower to DCFC compared to these latest competitors.

There are folks in both categories. The business question is how many feel as I do versus do not and the overall demand to fill their plant to maximize their profit. It will be interesting a year or so from now to look back to see the Volvo mix and how their market share vs BMW in this segment changes, positively or negatively. The average vehicle industry price keeps growing and is actually even higher now...about $53k, which, for those who can already cross that threshold (and admittedly, more and more cannot) actually reduces the cost percentage increase for the battery choice to meet their needs.

BTW, enjoy chatting with you. It's great to air different opinions and perceptions in a reasonable and civil tone on car forums....increasingly rare opportunity these days! :like:

The OOS video says Volvo P12 10% - 80% (that is 280 miles of EPA range) in 19 minutes. That will make it a very nice road tripper like the VW premium platform. The BMW does 280 miles in 21 minutes. They all will do a quick 10 minute top-up of 180 miles (+/-). So we already know a lot about the curve and how it performs.

I agree it is good to have a good discussion.

This video reviewer is good with a detailed review and directly compares to the iX3 which he drove late last year.

Good video and thanks. I’ll stay open minded until the R2 info becomes available but the hill to climb just got steeper.

Agreed. I am also interested to learn more about the planned Lucid Earth (and off-road version ala Cross Country) which is due out by the end of this year with a slightly lower price point. Plenty of options in this compact SUV space coming.

The Volvo has very good trunk flexibility and coming as standard with the full glass roof is competitive. Not sure about the door “handles”.

I think the bigger thing people miss when talking about the BMW cells is that it’s the 6th generation of their own cell and pack. I believe they may be the most advanced of any manufacturer when it comes to battery and cell design. I suspect that they have engineered a way for the cell to operate and warnings to prevent the conditions for a runaway event Rather than treating a runaway event. Very different things.

400 kW charging is gonna be a game changer for roadtripping. Look at this thing:

The Lucid Gravity was ripping at 419 kw on a Supercharger V4. Added 125 miles in six minutes. 50% battery in 11.5 minutes.

Why not do both? EX60 appears to be. Risk reduction is incremental.

I’d trust BMW engineering and software all day over Volvo. Last I checked, they’re still stumbling over the EX90.

I also don’t care for the look of the EX60. It’s attractive, but not cool/youthful, and the interior is ugly (my opinion). Perhaps I’ll like it better in person. The specs are impressive.

The iX3 and iX4 are still at the top of my list, followed by the R2. Really excited about all these new additions though.
