Think butt on floor , thighs against chest , knees up to chin and feet that won't go under the second row. aka : uncomfortable as a vietcong hotbox and basically unusable for anyone over age 4. And being back there in a crash - yikes.
Wow! Harsh. I personally enjoy a good Vietcong hotbox when I hit the spa.

Bad jokes aside, do you have personal experience with the r1s third row? Would love to know more about a personal experience.

In terms of legroom, I believe it’s 36.6”. I just bought a suburban to hold us over until the r1s comes and that only has 34.5” of legroom and I was comfortable enough back there with an inch of extra space between knee and seat when sitting in comfortable position. I am 5’10”, but have the legs of someone closer to 5’8”. I will say the kids started b!tching right away about legroom as they are used to a sequoia 3rd row, which is massive.

I had two Suburbans in the past. On long trips, we put the middle seats down and our two kids sat in the 3rd row seat. Plenty of room to stretch out and the dog had plenty of space as well, laying where the 2nd row seats folded flat. The kids referred to it as the "Stretch Limo". Looks like this could be done in the Rivian as well.

My kids would be jealous. We have 4, so they do not get footrests! We did get them the dog.

And all they do is complain about dog hair in their road snacks now, huh?
Hahaha. I think that might be the only thing they don’t complain about. I got a complete weathertech floor liner with the big lip around the edge to keep the suburban clean (still pulling melted crayon out of a land cruiser carpet 2 years later) and I am having the best time pissing the kids off by not allowing food in the new car despite the liner.

Are you talking about airplane seating?

Nobody outside Rivian has experience in the R1S third row, but certain forum members are convinced that RJ pissed in their wheaties and have apparently vowed to exact their revenge by occasionally blitzing the place with a bout of “the sky is falling.” It’s a treat.

I have a 5-seater on order, I have no use for the 3rd row and curious to see how much more cargo capacity we can expect vs 7 seater
If they are similar I guess i could just take the 7 seater (probably better resale too)

Pretty sure the only difference is the 5.1 cu/ft rear storage bin.
IE Filled up on the 7 seater and available for the 5 seater.

my expectation is the rear under floor storage is still there on the 5 seater, just larger. I believe the bin is there to make the load floor flat and not have a drop into the trunk.

I think you are correct. CS told me 5 seater has 3 more inches in height. Didn’t specify exactly where. I doubt second row seat design to be different for 5 seater to keep the flat floor and 3 inches for the length of the cargo. For me, even if it is just deeper storage under floor, I still would go for 5 seater as long as I get a flat floor. I always have a lot of junk in the trunk but rarely even use the second row seats. If those 3 inches is for the length of the cargo area all the way to the front seat, it would make car camping more feasible. As is, the opening in the back does not seem that high. I am dying for an owner get in there with a camera and measuring tape.

I can’t imagine if what we are getting is the same as what RJ is driving, why we have to speculate about these things.

I wonder if all the space under 3rd row seat is used for motors and associated parts:

The space for the third row seems to become a storage compartment with a false floor to keep that area flat

At this point, I am really starting to worry that this is more than just the usual abysmal communications - something could be very wrong with the 2nd/3rd row or cargo area usability and/or LE R1S deliveries could be much later than what is being announced – enough red flags now for me to add yet another order for an ICE alternative. Ford and GM aren’t doing much better than Rivian at estimating delivery dates, but at least I know what the product is.

I have a feeling 7 seaters are closer to done. Also it is possible that there are a few R1Ss are floating around and especially now that two of the big shots are driving them, there must be still some feedback rolling in that may have resulted in last minute design changes. That is the only reason I can see why we are not getting a closer look. I am too far back in the line for this to have a meaningful impact on me but I imagine there are some people that have closer delivery dates that had to choose between R1S and R1T or between Adventure and Explore without having sufficient information. I wish I could compare all of them in person.

You are correct, the alternatives are iffy as well. Silverado and CT still sound like a pie in the sky and Ford is doing a bang up job taking advantage of the situation with a half baked truck (2026 is supposed to be the fully baked version).

I am actually OK with my H1 2023 window. Some initial issues would be resolved by then. The other side of the coin is that by then, Rivian may have significantly ramped up and like Tesla it can become preoccupied by quarterly revenues for share holders rather than putting out quality products for customers. That would mean my R1S may be missing a break pad.

If Rivian decides to put profits/investors ahead of quality, I am out. One of the main reasons I am waiting for a Rivian instead of jumping to a Tesla is the "fit & finish" issues many people complain about.
