THIS. I'm not sure why everyone isn't screaming this point from the rooftops. The current product isnt that much different than what was in the market in 2023. AND they have already announced that current hardware will reach end of life before true point-to-point autonomy.

If you pay $2,500 for this you are basically making a charitable donation to fund Rivian's R&D so they can sell you a new car and make you pay for it all over agin if you actually want autonomy.
I just want lane change on demand on highways: which hurts as it was included and baked into the cost of almost every gen2 on the road (until they removed mobileye hardware from new builds in November last year).

So ultimately I'm looking at now paying for an alternative implementation of a feature that Rivian/We already paid for. Yes I did know this day would come, but like others have commented in this thread the carrot of the other UHF capabilities are not yet worth the stick of the price - and any update now is frankly too late to enable meaningful trial time to change that opinion. UHF offers glimmers of great potential, but really has yet to achieve anything more than mobileye has on other platforms (eg VW). So our gen2 will probably live out its days with gen1 levels of autonomy.

Sounds like I’m an outlier here, but I’ll probably pay the $2500 since it stays with the vehicle. Will make our R1 a little easier to sell hopefully 10 years down the road. Not sure I would buy it if I didn’t have enough gear shop points. The wording of the email I received makes it pretty clear that gear shop points cannot be used for the monthly payment but can be used for the full 2.5k

if you haven’t seen it, I urge you to check out the AI day video showing what’s coming with point to point city self driving. That should be coming at some point to G2. I would assume in the next update. It looked impressive.
Never spend your money with an EV or technology company based on future promises. Base what you're willing to spend on what the system currently delivers. You're likely to be disappointed otherwise.

I think that’s where the monthly makes more sense for most people. I am planning a big national parks trip with my family next summer, and I would likely activate it for that month and feel it was worth it.
Will they let you "month to month" it multiple times like that?

I know Tesla does for it's membership to Superchargers.

Good question, I certainly hope so!

The overwhelming majority of the Tesla "subscribers" to FSD are people who subscribe for one month in nov/Dec or for July/Aug when they are taking a road trip. Then they cancel. Rivian will be the same.

I just got this email. 49.99 a month for what they have now is an absolute no. At those prices for current functionality, there's a market for Comma to make a Gen 2 compatible unit. The UHF is barely usable for free, let alone 50 bucks a month. I'm a little surprised at how expensive this is TBH.
I'm still shocked Ford charges essentially the same pricing for just hands free mapped highway assist only.

Wonder if once UHF is pay walled, the pre UHF Rivian hands free highway assist, sans lane change, will be the free option.

Idk what Ford is doing for new buyers. But I bought mine in 2022 and they have given me a free Bluecruise renewal every year through Feb 2027 so far. Not sure they are actually making any money on it.

That's almost exactly what Rivian's Autonomy+ page states.

Who knows what's up with Ford. The bought my '22 Lightning back for what I paid for it after two years. I was over the lemon law mileage limited but they wanted it back. I'm guessing they wanted it so their engineers could dismantle the battery pack. Then they cancelled the Lightning.

Just can't tell if the hands free part of the highway assist will be there, like is was pre UHF but post when they shut off mobileye on the Gen 2s.

Gotcha - I'm not sure on that one either. Granted I'm a Gen1 driver that won't be seeing any of this, and I'm okay with that. 🤣

I hate phantom braking on G1. This is why I want dumb cruise control, especially when I am not on the freeway. I am surprised to hear that it's still a problem in G2. I guess it will need the lidar.
