Hello Everyone,
Should I buy the full-size spare tire or the compact spare tire?
The car has the 22" Range wheels.
We don't do offroading, just road trips.
Thanks,
Riccardo

I have a T and do have a full size spare but it is not in the wheel well. It is in my garage and I only use it for 5 tire rotations to get more life from them.

If you bring a spare, you should probably also carry jack pucks, as most tow trucks probably won't have them, and even some tire shops. And if you plan to replace a tire yourself, also a worthy jack and necessary tools. I think the better option is to carry a tire puncture repair kit, as these cost about $25+, fit into a small space, lightweight, and the same method a tire shop will use to repair a puncture. Easy and quick for anyone to do and they will repair a puncture for the life of the tire.

Anybody have experience with the repair kit or "goop" that Rivian provides? I also carry a puncture repair kit with plugs just in case.

The goop is the very last resort for me. Plugs are number 1 and one of my wheels sports one. Number 2 is the spare. I have a compact one. Number 3 goop for the irreversible mess it makes.

Green slime and a small compressor. I walked out to my R1T after 10" of snow and then freezing rain to find a flat. Couldn't get to the spare in the bed as it was frozen in. Used the on-board compressor, drove it into my barn, and watched it go flat in 12 hours. I did some research then picked up a can of Green Slime, put it in and inflated. Took all of 5 minutes.

I looked at our Volvo 90 plug-in hybrid and it came from the factory with a kit containing"Volvo slime" AND a compressor instead of a spare. I picked up a spare Green Slime to keep in my truck.

Just curios. Can I install a plug while wheel is still attached to R1? Is jack + pucks required?

Yes, just rotate the wheel so you can get at the puncture. Remove the screw or whatever. Use the rake file to ream the hole. Insert a plug to the middle in the fork tool. Coat it with lots of glue so it slides easier. Force the tool and plug into the tread so the plug is inside but still has tails outside. Then pull the tool back out forcefully. EV/Truck tires are thick and strong so it's not a gentle affair. The plug will stay in and vulcanize to the tire. You can cut the tails flush. Air up.

FWIW, you can pick up a Rivian wheel pretty cheap (I bought a 21" for $20). I put my best old tire on it when I replaced the factory OEMs ($0). Now I have in my garage a spare that fits our T or S. I keep it in the T but throw it in the back if we are going to take the S off pavement or somewhere too out of the way. Otherwise the compact is perfectly good for everyday city/freeway.

Works fine. Several videos on YT.

If you can drive/roll and make location of puncture to be accessible... no, don't need to jack up. But every owner should own a set of pucks anyway. Removal of wheel could be less awkward and allow you easier time inserting the plug (pressing downward vs sideways or at an awkward angle). For this reason, and to avoid removing wheel, I recommend adding a rubber mallet to your kit—so you don't have to work as hard. Lots of videos on YT on how to use plugs.

Plugs will not work on punctures and cuts in the sidewall or shoulder.
