Does anyone think there will ever be a Gen3 R1 - I for one hope so - i have 2024 R1s Gen1 Adventrue dual performance than i waited nearly two years for. The changes to Gen 2 are not enought for me to consider and upgrade but there are some features if introduced that would compel me to do so.

MY WISH LIST
  • LARGER BATTERY PACK
    • Prior to lauch of the the first R1T - there were rumors of an version of R1s with a ~180 kw version - it would have eliminated the third row seating to accomodate the extra battery
    • This would be great for those who tow and for those who take long road trip
  • FASTER CHARGING
    • I am not an engineer and donty know what this would involve but such a vehicle will likely need to charge much faster to compete
  • AUTONOMY OF COURSE
    • I am sure any future models will have all the upgraded sensors, lidar and compute
What do you all think ??

I get to be first to say it: CARPLAY!

Other things I'd like:
Glove box in the dash where they would traditionally be located.
Built in cooler in the center console for cold snacks on longer drives.
Real leather seat surfaces
Clock relocated to left side of the screen in a larger font size
Odometer on the drivers screen.
Bigger inverter so the 120V outlets can have higher output or separate circuits. 240V outlet would be great.

Air springs and hydraulics that are reliable enough to support a 7k lb auto.
Half shafts that are reliable/durable enough to last 10yrs.
Four wheel steering (they hired someone for it).
Solid state batteries or higher density batteries (assuming gen3 won't come out until late 2028-2029 so they might exist by then).

The only thing that would get me to even consider upgrading my Gen 1 would be if all three of these came true.

At least 200kWh pack, at least 400kW peak charging (with a good charge curve that can add at least 150 kWh in under 30 min, for maximum towing-range charging performance) the same autonomy of the Lidar equipped R2 - with full autonomy available at vehicle purchase time.

Personally, I'd like to see an "R1TW" - 1.5 ft wheelbase/bed stretch, the extra length completely filled with battery (including filling the extra space in the T over S now that was supposed to be the original Max pack.) Heck, ditch the gear tunnel and tonneau garage, and fill those with battery. Give me an 800V 18-module pack instead of the current 400V 9-module pack. 280 kWh, 500 kW charging.

Gen 3 should only happen when the solid state battery is implemented with 800V+ architecture to lighten the vehicle.

Making 200kWh battery using today's technology will only make the R1 weight more than it already should be.

It not the battery size, it's the range you get from it. Getting real world 400 miles would be good with higher energy density battery.

This. I just want a suspension system that rides like a $100k car should and doesn't require something like 1 in 5 of these vehicles to have some major suspension component replaced in the first 30k miles. If they do NOTHING ELSE for an R1 refresh, they need to do a major rethink of the suspension.

Agree with everyone about suspension. I don’t want a suspension that is breaking all the time, loud and clunky.

800v+ architecture
Globebox
Gen1 door handles
Lidar and autonomy updates
Heated armrests / panels like BMW
HUD?
Stronger seat ventilation

You know what would be cool? Customer replaceable interior accent trim. Sometimes, I want to change the look - different wood/texture/cloth inserts would be a great accessory idea. I’d pay to have other trim accent choices.

I would want the following to have me switch from my 24 Gen 1 Quad:

1) Seats with massage
2) Panoramic roof (as we currently have) with the ability to have a portion of it open up as a sun roof
3) heads up display
4) Rear passenger cooled and 3rd row heated/cooled seats
5) better battery (longer mileage)

agree. We came from a LWB Range Rover and miss the middle row space. Other than that loving our Rivian.
Also someone commented on rear wheel steering which our Range Rover had and honestly the rivian turns just as good /sharp as the Range Rover did so not sure it’s a real upgrade IMO. Maybe because the rivian has a shorter wheelbase than our LWB did.

massaging seats are a great feature and have them on my ford lighting.

Give me the 180 kWh pack that I originally pre-ordered along with better charging system thermals / faster charging and I'll upgrade. Give it the Gen3 autonomy platform that R2 is getting and I'd be thrilled, even more so if it works while towing. I love my Gen1 Quad, but towing is a bit of a challenge out west as top charging sucks and is somewhat often needed to go over 75% to make it to the next charger.

As much as I love my Rivian, it will likely get replaced for its mediocre charging speeds and meh range (for the Gen 1 Quad, at least). Those are two biggest issues currently with the R1 lines. As others have mentioned, a longer wheelbase (just have it match the R1T) would go a long way, as second and third low leg room should be better IMO.

My personal wishlist, similar to others, so Rivian should at least take note of the ones that keep coming up:

1. Faster charging and more range (450+ miles total, charging under 25 minutes)
2. More interior space, so ideally longer wheel base
3. Massaging seats and thigh support extender (a heaven sent on roadtrips)
4. More reliable air suspension and softer rider quality in standard mode
5. Copy the Scout, give us regular door handles and at least a volume knob. I'm not a "WE NEED PHYSICAL BUTTONS" guy but some well thought out ones would go a long way. Not a must, but a cabana style roof would be really SICK.
6. Updated steering wheel with better material and buttons that closer resemble the R2
7. Automated folding rear seats and bottom half of the liftgate

Niceties would include things like rear wheel steering, spare tire mount, screens lifted higher to be closer to line of sight, and not trying to start a debate here, but moving the chargeport to the rear driver side or front passenger would also be nice. So currently I'm considering a Lucid Gravity for my next car, which checks a lot of these boxes - however, software issues with Lucid as a whole has given me pause. So hoping either Rivian reveals a R1 Gen3 with significant updates or Lucid gets it software act together so that I can justify burning my hard earned money on a rapidly depreciating asset lol

Besides the obvious range and charging improvements, here's my list:
  • Better HVAC/heat pump for winter conditions
  • Heated headlights for winter conditions
  • Wipers that work in winter conditions
  • Spare tire latch that opens in below freezing/winter conditions (R1T only)
  • Better quality control for NVH and overall reliability
  • Manual door handles
  • Glovebox
  • Improved audio
  • I would still love the fully automatic tailgate (up & down) that folds down 180* like what was demoed in 2018/2019.
  • I'll take the same size battery as today if I could get faster charging with less weight.
