I'm hoping $57,500 as spec'd to compete with Model Y AWD Perf.

y perf price.webp
I was thinking $57,9xx so that aligns with your thoughts. I would love to see it at $54,9xx and would be a for-sure buyer at that price. Will be trading in the R1S.

Wow they really crushed it. I was bracing for losing a lot of cool features, and all we lost was fold flat front row seats, which we knew about.

Seems like they are positioning the launch spec to compete with the Model Y performance, despite a tri motor planned. At anything under $60k they'll be sold out for years. Off road capable, drivers screen, 360 cam, open air cabin, premium steering wheel controls. Customers of New cars want a novel experience for their money and Rivian has delivered.

Now I wait to hear about gross margins so I can start to get excited for R3X...

There were definitely more, but no real deal breakers.

I only managed to watch 50% of Dougs video so far, but I thought they were going back to gen1 style mechanical door releases? Looks to still be electronic in the R2 he's reviewing?

Also -that rear wiper recess is gonna fill up with pine needles so fast come fall.

The change that's supposed to be happening is that the emergency door mechanism will be easier to access. Up front it looks like it's similar to the front of the R1's in that it's a handle. In back it's still a pull-cord, but behind a flap instead of having to remove a full panel.

And not a problem with existing cars? Sure, it'll happen, as it has always happened to other cars in various nooks and crannies.

Is there another car with a wiper mounted like this? Requiring a dedicated drain port etc?

Is there another car that doesn't collect debris anywhere?? But it's a pet peeve specific to the R2, why?

No, but compare to the front windshield wipers of any car. Any debris that hits the windshield slides down into the crevice where those are parked. At least this has a smaller aperture debris needs to fall into. The real test is how easy it is to clean. To me it looks like one blast from a hose and its clear.

I own a 2025 R1S (2nd Gen), Dual Max. Its been in the shop repeatedly for many things, some big and some small. The next medium thing that breaks i will be doing a buyback/Lemon. I have owned a leaf, Bolt, 3, Y and S before this car. Having said that:
1. I have looked all over for what will replace the R1S - there is really nothing that competes. The closest is the Kia/Hyundai 3-rows SUVs, but those are lower "quality" and as far as i can tell suffer from their own issues (i have a friend on their second battery on a Kia and doing a buyback on that).
2. Despite far too many of their vehicles having issues (LAST on a recent CR survey of issues), the concept and overall design of the Rivian (R1S and R2) are excellent, and super utilitarian, and theres no vehicle that really competes. Comparing the Y to this R2, i dont see why most buyers (assuming similar cost) wouldn't buy the R2, especially once Lidar releases and their self driving does the major stuff - freeway cruising mostly. As a utility vehicle (which is what the Y and R2 are) the R2 appears to win hands down on most variables. Even if you're just driving to work and doing stuff on weekends with the family, the R2 wins (as far as we can see) on ground clearance, wheelbase, rear leg room (based on that Doug video), cargo space behind 2nd row, frunk space, etc. The Y may win on 0-60, price by a few thousand, range by 10-15 miles, and of course self driving (which is overrated on the Y for the price and on which Rivian is rapidly catching up).
3. The big questions are going to be quality (currently low), time to wait for service (already long in most places - tho improving), charge time (which is horrific in the R1, especially in heat due to bad battery pack thermal management).

I am hopeful that some of the new components (coils vs airbags, new motors, maybe better battery pack design) will improve quality, and that some of the existing components and software are finally mature enough to just work. If that happens then i think Tesla is going to get their asses kicked. Same or better vehicle for basically the same price, way higher "cool" factor, and no fascist overtones! :)

Any answers on the following:
  • Easy drop rear seat buttons from the trunk?
  • Do the R2's have ventilated/cooled front seats?
Sucks that the pop out quarter panel windows didn't make the cut. Maybe an option? Or offered on the Tri?

3 years into ownership on R1 and at full capacity when new the 314 range was real world 250 miles, I’m now down to 284
Max range which is more like 220 real world or less, they really need an option over 400 miles which should be 325-350 real world miles of range, not every model just as an option for those that need/ want it. I can barely make my drive from DFW to Bentonville Arkansas and have been almost stranded due to the range limits and severely limited charging options on that route. Since this doesn’t apply to everyone that’s why I’m saying hopefully a 400+ range option will exist
Mine 2023 R1S large is the same. It was 130 about 10 months ago. The last time I checked it was 119 a few weeks ago but now slowly went back to 121. Still it is a little bit worriesome about it. I also have a 2024 dual large R1T and it has not change one bit. Still at 131 total capacity.
