That's definitely a question that needs to be asked by journalists. There's a big demand for a max pack option. I would pay for it in a heartbeat.
Quite possibly a payload issue; the primary reason the original max pack was cancelled. The weight penalty has an even greater impact with a proportionally smaller vehicle.

4400 lbs towing is a clue that supports this speculation.

The problem with lidar will be the software. They will use it for data collection initially because the software will be ready and it helps even non-lidar gen 2 cars.

For customer level advancements that really uniquely take advantage of lidar, i'm a little more skeptical how soon they can get everything developed. It could be a much longer wait.

That's the rub in the decision making for people who kind of want more autonomy, but don't really care if it's the software is that far out. There's no clear way to know at this point.
It is about much more than just Lidar or software. The "Lidar" vehicle has 8-10X the ADAS computing power. In every mode and in every situation it will be safer and more responsive. There are a number of upgraded sensors including the improve mm radar, and there is a 200 TOPs (that is as powerful as the current gen 2 ADAS) in vehicle AI processor. That means the AI capability will be instantaneous instead of out to the cloud and back.

There is much more to the upgraded tech package than Lidar or the Level 3 / 4 future build.

Oh, and one other comment on the time to market for the ADAS AI upgrades: Rivian is already (they said so) running massive simulations to train the AI. The simulation systems are becoming vastly more advanced and can radically short time to market verses what is not absolutely ancient technology and approach used when Tesla was developing Autopilot/FSD. Indeed everything Tesla did before 2022 basically went into the trash bin and they did a complete do-over. Companies are going to be brining out eyes-off ADAS at a much quicker pace over the coming few years. I would be surprised if Rivian does not have something functional on the road with L3 highway by end of 2027.

Yeah, speaker count seems on the low side…but you never know until you hear it with your own ears. Hopefully it has Atmos. Anyone know speaker count with the excellent sounding system in the MY?

Edit: I looked it up, 15 drivers plus a sub. No wonder it sounds great! A bit disappointed with R2…but will hold final thoughts until I actually listen to it.
True, however I have the standard audio with 10 speakers and 600 watts in my Gen 2 R1S and it's, ahem, not good.

Maybe when you adventure, there is no music allowed?

That's great to hear. What's the efficiency drop off like for freeway road trips?
Been a little bit since I took a freeway road trip, but I usually keep it in the 2.2-2.5 mi/kWh range. Next time I take a freeway trip without my trailer I'll try and grab the number for you.

The real question is will the LiDar version also be a LE model. If so, that would mean that the LE model will be the whole 1st 12 months of production...

Are paint, wheels, interior, accents/badging going to cost as mush as the R1.

A Prem Dual-motor R2 for $55,500(w/dest) with options will get over $60k quickly.

Will adaptive suspension at least be an option on the Prem?

The LE is going to end up being a steal in the long run.

Agreed on the SW being the bottleneck. I think it will be another 3-5 years. By then current HW is obsolete and people will complain about being left behind, but that's tech. Unless Rivian changes course and allows you to upgrade then people will always have to debate when is the right time for them to jump in.
And it will remain a moot debate, as you said… that’s tech and guaranteed obsolescence. If they can’t deal with it, they shouldn’t put themselves in-market.

R2 Launch Edition price, including delivery, will closely match BMW's mid 2026 debut of the new BMW ix3 EV SUV for about $60K. Interesting times!

The pricing sounds great. However, I'm seriously doubting the specs, more specifically the range estimate.

330 miles on a 87.9 kwh battery equates to 3.75 mi/kWh.

That only seems remotely possible in low speed, around town, frequent stops type of trips.
Yep. I wonder why they couldn't stuff 100 kWh battery in there to push the range to "real life" 300 miles?

I’m in for a launch edition.

2 years ago we bought a Volvo XC40 recharge for $55,000. It has 250 miles of range, 2000lb towing, very rudimentary software, 150kw peak charging and small cargo space. R2 is better in every way for a similar price 2 years later. I’ll take it.

Physical space, weight, cost.... the obvious answers!
