These are pricing from a confident company saying bring it on Tesla. These are excellent prices. Great job RJ.

I was hoping for a 55k launch edition
Said it right there. What were you hoping for on the launch edition price?
I have a feeling as time goes on, LE owners will be quite happy with what they paid. Rivian is kinda hooking up early adopters.R2 Launch Edition price, including delivery, will closely match BMW's mid 2026 debut of the new BMW ix3 EV SUV for about $60K. Interesting times!
I tried to get my better half into a used XC40 late last year, in the $25k range. Wow, we thought our Equinox EV was decently quick but the AWD XC40 Recharge was LIGHTNING fast. I loved it, he didn't, if the R2 wasn't coming I would consider one but then again that tiny screen, ugh.I’m in for a launch edition.
2 years ago we bought a Volvo XC40 recharge for $55,000. It has 250 miles of range, 2000lb towing, very rudimentary software and small cargo space. R2 is better in every way for the same price 2 years later. I’ll take it.
The non-LE R2 pricing ranges from $3500-$5500 above Model Y equivalent. I think both vehicles will hold their own segment in the market. Rivian being a more premium product. These are pricing from a confident company saying bring it on Tesla. These are excellent prices. Great job RJ.
The affordable base R2 is ending up being a bit of a miss. The pricing for R2 that will make up bulk of the sales is not bad, but not earth shattering either.R2 Launch Edition

DEFINITY NOT A TESLA KILLER
R2 Standard (late 2027)
$45,000
THE PROMISED $45K R2 IS WELL OVER A YEAR AWAY. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT.

HOW'S THAT STOCK PRICE DOING?
bah humbug. The BMW iX3 uses 46120 batteries to get 110 kwh in the same footprint. Rivian is using the little 4695s (same ones BMW is using for the smaller 3 series sedan). If you bump the pack by 1 inch using 46120s you get a max pack that, even with the aero and weight penalty, would deliver just shy of 400 miles EPA. You would lose an inch on the ground clearance which you can claw back with a suspension lift kit all of which would make for a badass max pack edition.Quite possible a payload issue; the primary reason the original max pack was cancelled. The weight penalty has an even greater impact with a proportionally smaller vehicle.
4400 lbs towing is a clue that supports this speculation.
Elon has become the Tesla killer. LOL.R2 Launch Edition

Why? They will sell every single LE produced no problem. The performance upgrade is simply a software unlock so more profits for them.Said it right there.
I think a non-performance launch edition would have served rivian better.
You then said that the launch edition price was $12K higher than you expected. That math don't math...Said it right there.

It is actually priced very good. They will sell every LE unit.Said it right there.

That's why they have engineers: to figure out how to add 15% more range. Yes, maybe at the expense or weight/towing and cost. But plenty of people will pay for max pack including me.Physical space, weight, cost.... the obvious answers!
Why? Because batteries aren’t free. And if you are trying to plan a product at a specific price target, you have to balance three things: manufacturing cost, profit margin, and selling price (and how high you could get away with, without losing potential buyers).Yep. I wonder why they couldn't stuff 100 kWh battery in there to push the range to "real life" 300 miles?
