Why couldn't Rivian add a shade like this to the current roof?

Wait a second i just posed this picture because of the Dog and had to take a second look. is that a retractable sun shade? this has been shown before correct that was one of my main gripes against going away from the electrocromatic.

That's not a Rivian so that could be partly why it has a sunshade.

*edit* If you were using the photo to show it's possible to have a sunshade in cars with sunroofs, yes.. yes it is. But Rivian wants you to enjoy the sun, whether you like it or not. :CWL:

I'm confused... that's definitely not a Rivian.

They could have, but it reduces headroom. That's the main issue. The pano roofs EVs use are pretty good at blocking light, I'd want door window shades before a roof shade.

I can think of a few reasons:
1. Counting on electrochromic glass and found out too late in the development cycle they couldn’t go that route.
2. Tesla (and Ford Mustang Mach E, I think) get away without a shade so that sets the bar low.
3. Cost.

That’s why I’m not getting too concerned and wasting energy worrying about it until we get our vehicle and start using it. We explore in the desert a lot so it could be an issue for us but I’m not going down the path of assuming the worst until proven otherwise.

I remeber reading about the "electrochromatic" roof several years ago. Neat idea, but it seems to have gone by the wayside. I'm not a big fan of sun roofs in vehicles, but I guess that I will just have to grin and bear it.

Good call. I will say that it was very effective at preventing any heat transfer when I drove the R1T. Granted, no one will confuse the PNW with SoCal or the desert, but it was a sunny day that caused plenty of heat transfer in my other vehicles.

I hope it will be just as effective for you and your adventures!

If you've never had a car with a glass roof and it concerns you, I can tell you that most people get used to it very quickly and you dont' think about it. I have a model S with the all Glass roof and it's never been an issue of too much sun or heat. I haven't once thought about it after getting the car.

and as someone else pointed out, the extra headroom is way better than having some slide out cover. If you've ever sat in the back seat of a Model S without the glass roof, it's significantly shorter and more claustrophobic for the rear seat passengers than the glass roof version which gives more headroom

Interestingly Hyundai includes a power shade with the Ioniq5 glass roof. First time I have noticed such an offering in a solid glass roof car. Of course they are common on all vehicles with true panoramic sunroofs and have very little impact on headroom.
